Im building a 300WM, 26in Rock Creek barrel on a 700 action and I was wondering what everyone thought about putting a muzzle brake on a gun like this. Ive read what the pros and cons are of using them and I just wanted some wisdom on the issue. Personally I dont want one for the sole reason of the volume of the noise coming back at the shooter. Any info is appreciated..

Re: Muzzle Break

yep, i'd rather have a muzzle brake than have a muzzle break. your accuracy really goes downhill after your muzzle breaks.

Re: Muzzle Break

This rifle is going be a hunting rifle. It will be shot off a bench but Im just worried about the noise in the field. Ive been hunting with guys shooting rifles with muzzle brakes and the noise is unbelievable, one or two shots and you gotta check your ears to make sure they're not bleeding. Yeah you could always have ear protection but what if you forget them. When something hits your ears and hurts you develop a flinch anticipating the sound.. Thats what i don't want.. I could always have one put on later..

Oh and thanks for the spelling check..

Re: Muzzle Break

Muzzle brake does not necessary need to have increased sound report. It all depends upon design. If design incorporates expansion chamber of some sort, positioned between the muzzle end of the barrel and actual muzzle brake part of the device, it will cut the noise quite a bit. I build my own muzzle brakes with expansion chambers, and it works real good to control both the sound report, and, as a side effect, the flash.

Re: Muzzle Break

"Brake" or "no-brake", I started using hearing protection several years ago when hunting. My hearing, what I have left, is too valuable. My regret is not using hearing protection for ALL shooting sports, and in other high-noise environments, earlier in life.

Re: Muzzle Break

Normally muzzle brakes are louder to someone standing just off to the side of the rifle then they are to the shooter. This is because you only have one ear exposed and you head is blocking the other one from the shock wave.
I made the mistake of taking two shots with a rifle using a brake ONE TIME during a hunt. The first broke the deer down but it was struggling to get up, the second shot did us both in.
To be honest I never heard the first shot, but the second was unbearable...
