George and company (GAP)just finished a model 7 Remington which we gave to my son for his first deer rifle.
It came in just in time to go with us to South Texas on a White tail hunt at his uncles ranch.
They have seen a nine point management buck and they wanted my son to have first crack at it.
After 4 hunts seeing nothing, we decided to give it one more try. This time, we spotted the South Texas buck.
He was calm and steady and drilled him at 130 yards right thru the boiler room. You can see the entry behind his hand.
138 inches and 168 field dressed.
Not bad for an eight year old.

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

Thats a good buck for anybody even after years of hunting

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

South of Fowlerton, between Cotula and Pleasanton.
Great area, overrun by the oil patch.
Still great hunting and great times.

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

First Texas buck that I've seen that isn't "Skinny" by WI standards lol

I agree, its a great buck for anybody regardless of age!

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

Awesome! What bullet did he use? Trying to move my 9 yr old up from the 223AI to the 243AI.

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

That is a very nice buck and I am sorta jealous.

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

Always good to see stuff like this.

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

Rifle came in just in time for the hunt so we were forced to use factory Federal Premium with 85 gr. Barnes Triple Shock.
It did the trick.

On the rifle, GAP took a Model 7- 223 and:
Re-barreled with new benchmark barrel
Install Vias muzzle break
True the action
Trigger job
Install and fit new PTG bolt one piece fluted bolt with Templar bolt handle
Cerakote entire gun flat black.

I installed a 20 minute base and 6-24 Vortex PST FFP MIL/MIL.
I am starting him out on MIL/MIL so he will be good to go when he is old enough for tactical matches.
He will be my shooting partner.

LOVE to see those youngsters get involved early on! Nice shot, too.

What barrel profile and length did you go with? Any idea what the weight is of the rifle?

Re: My 8 year olds first buck with GAP 243

The profile matches a Krieger Standard Sporter #2.
The gun weighs 8.5 lbs with Vortex scope-cheap bathroom scale.
The overall length is 39", with 22" barrel and Vias break.

The goal was a small framed rifle that shoots like a full size.

They nailed it as always.

Thanks George.
Your handy work at it's finest.

Have fun at the GRIND...

That is a nice buck. Notice that the boy is in shirt sleeves. Until today it has been very hot in Houston (where I live), and even hotter on the border. It doesn't take very long for one to start to swell in this heat.

Congratulations on a great hunt and set of memories that will last forever.
