She had a her cataract / glaucoma surgery yesterday. Then we have to worry about her Macular deaeration. Yep, right at 75, my little Ms Sure Shot, has every eye issue you can have all at once.

Anyway, she wakes up this morning and checks out how her eye looks and discovers she has no real vision this morning in the eye they did surgery.

So, to try to make the best light out of what is a really worrisome information

In December 2023 I became Dead Eye Dick.

Since Dick is the nickname for Richard

I suppose my love shall now be known as

Dead Eye Richelle.

Richelle is the feminine form of Richard.

Wishing her the best. Had cataract surgery the end of January and eye is still not fully stabilized and been a frustrating few months since surgery. Had great vision prior to the surgery but cataract was staring to cause issues. Wound up with a astigmatism which really makes looking through scopes challenging even with corrective lenses. Plan on getting that corrected.

Sorry to hear about the continuing process of losing eyesight. Nobody likes it, but at least your wife has you to take care of her, and it sounds like you have the right heart and mindset to do a good job. Best of luck and you both keep your heads up.

My grandmother is 98, and has been suffering from macular degeneration for the better part of the last decade... being probably 99% blind now. She's also lost most of her hearing and is almost physically incapable of doing just about everything. On top of that, her short-term memory started slipping a couple years ago and is all but gone too. She is/was such a great matriarch of the family. We love her, but she freely admits that she is little more than a potted plant that you face towards a window. That doesn't mean that we don't continue to march on with her though.

Here’s Bill in 2019 shooting an old Nagant revolver. His favorite gun was a 4 inch S&W 10-6, followed closely by a 2 inch 10-6. I still have both of those 10-6 revolvers in the safe. If eyesight wasn’t an issue, he would have stayed behind his old Rem700 in 22-250. He bought it brand new in the 70s while stationed in Alaska. He kept receipts for everything and had the original from way back when he purchased that rifle as well(still sitting in the safe also)

My Dad had MD and the eye surgeon did surgery and created a "bleb" which relieved the pressure and stopped it from progressing.
From what I understood a slit on top of the eye which had a couple of stitches in it. The surgeon then checked the pressures and removed one or two stitches to adjust the pressure in the eye.

We’re doing everything we can. Brenda had her next day checkup this afternoon and the surgeon was satisfied with her progress. As a former Contact lens wearer, I’m an expert at eyedrops, so, I go after it, four times a day. Took over cooking/dishwashing/clothes washing and (UGH) vacuuming for the time being. I normally do a lot of cooking anyway and try to chip in with the dishwashing and clothes washing so it’s not something I haven’t done before.

We got a ways to go and sometime in the future the right eye is line up. Puts a bit of a cramp in my little lifestyle, but she’s always stood in for me, and I would walk through fire for her.

Funny thing, my eyesight, even considering the occlusion I suffered December 2023, is excellent. While in treatment for the occlusion, i was testing 20-16 and on a good day I could get many on the 20-12 chart. But I can’t hear for nothing. Brenda has excellent hearing, but now this. Guess we will be more of a team in our future years than we ever thought.

I pray every night now that my health remains excellent, because my Brenda needs me.

It is a bittersweet conundrum as we grow old with our loves; but I believe that love between soulmates grows as we get older. It can be a double-edged sword. Worth it? Yup. Good Luck and God Bless.

She has been gaining vision all through the day. She was reading an eye chart, quite well. At her stage, the doctor noted that often, people a day after surgery can’t read the letter E that is ten inches tall. She made it through the second chart, third of five lines. So, yes, she is getting much better, but her regimen among other things, requires no stenosis lifting, no bending over, not getting water in her eye and making sure she gets her drops in four times a day.

Prayers up. Glad that you have each other for support. It makes all the difference...

+1 on taking lutine, zeaxanthin and astaxanthin for eye health.

I've found that my eyes feel better when using the Oasis brand of eye drops. Glycerine based with sodium hyaluronate and preservative free. But it is more difficult to find as it's only sold by optometrists and on Amazon. The preservative free products from Systane and Refresh would cause irritation in my eyes after a day of use.

When I was a contact wearer, I had to use the Natural Tears eye drops. Anything else would tear up my eyes. Funny thing, when I got into my mid fifties, my eyes changed and went for near sightedness to perfect. In my seventies, I am loosing some of my close vision, but still good enough to read all but the smallest print in dim light. Got a floater, but I look around it (except when it centers on the cross hairs :(. ).

Make sure to follow the doctors recommendations. The drops probably contain prednisone which will help control the swelling that is common after cataract surgery.

If they did not give you a paper to log/check off when drops were used, you should create one.

The log really helped me in keeping track of when/if I used the drops on a daily basis. In my case I had to use the drops in both eyes for 4 weeks. Each week decreasing the number of drops by 1. After about two weeks, it was really easy for me to forget to use the drops, especially if I was distracted by work or something else.

@Dead Eye Dick
May God bless you and your wife.

Last year, I had to get new glasses and I went to the eye doctor to get a new scrip. Even though I am left-handed, I shoot rifles right-handed. He told me that I have the beginnings of a cataract in my left eye.

"Funny," I replied. "I drive a Toyota."

edited to add: My wife's name is Brenda, as well, no kidding.

I was also told that almost a decade ago. During the experimental treatment for the occlusion (and the stroke behind my eye and the bleeding inside the eye) I had multiple pictures from multiple angles which I must admit, was often quite painful as well as lights to check the retina that were painfully bright. No mention was ever made in all these checkups and multiple treatments of anything even resembling a cataract. What I do know is that my eyes are extremely light in color and the fact that at almost 77 years of age, my hair is still very blond, totally white when I was a young child.

That says, I can have the same light sensitivity that people with cataracts have. And boy, are bright lights hard. Worse is bright cloudy days. They are worse than sunny days. Anyway, I don’t go anywhere without at least two pairs of sunglasses.

Enough of my stupid problems, Brenda has been a might bit feisty this evening, so, she must be getting back to her old self or maybe it’s all just starting to bother her. It’s a good thing they found both the glaucoma and the Macular degeneration in time to give some treatment. Now jsut get us through it and it will be praiseworthy.

Finally to eveyone who has written. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. You men are fine people.

Brenda didn’t sleep all that well last night, but this morning, she’s up and at em. Even made her own coffee and was delighted to see a Red Headed Woodpecker on our feeder. She’s getting better, surely with the help of all of your prayers and thoughts.

Knee Mail dispatched for a speedier recovery.
