I thought I'd share my new build along with some pictures I took of her.

The vitals:
Barnard repeater action
Bartlein 26" -5R 1:7.5 twist F-class (story here) chambered in 6XC for 115s
CG Jackson Mod 22 trigger
AICS 2.0 custom machined
Atlas bipod
BO Rings
Mac Tilton custom base
SWFA SS 5x20HD

I had this gun built by Mac Tilton to be a tactical competition rig. It has an F-class barrel because that's what Mac had on hand and it allowed him to build the gun in about 45 days. If I had waited on a medium Palma, I was looking at a 6+month wait. It is not light but then again I'm not planning on carrying this on 20 mile hikes either.

Mac Tilton is just a great guy to deal with. Very knowledgable and very efficient with a heck of a reputation for plumbing accurate rifles. Mac had to do a bit of milling in the AICS stock to have the Barnard fit. I have another AICS 1.5 for Rem -5R and would say that the Tilton/Barnard combo fits MUCH more precisely than a stand rem drop-in. Pics of his work included below.

This gun is going to be a shooter. I just started my load development this weekend. The tightest group (0.45") was produced with 38.5g of RL17 with a median MV of 2968fps. I was able to get up to 3104fps without any pressure with 40.1g of RL17 so more speed is there if I feel like chasing it. My next step is to run another test between 38.5g and 39.5g in .2g increments and then start playing with seating depths to get the tightest groups. I also have 4350 that I'll start working up after I have my RL17 load. I like the way RL17 "feels" in recoil impulse. It just feels smoother than H4350 but a lot of folks have said that 4350 is the accuracy king in 6XC so I'll work that into the test next. I'm also testing Winchester 22-250 bras vs Norma 6XC brass. So far, I don't see a difference after two firings each. The Norma does measure more uniformly and the primer flash holes are about 10 times better than the Win brass but I'm still testing.

This was my first custom build and my introduction into reloading so the first time I pulled the trigger my heart rate was up there. I was very relieved when it went bang! The CG Jackson trigger is just about the best trigger I've ever felt... Two stages, crisp, and light. I'm finding the two stage trigger helps me in pre-shot routine.

Here's some pictures after I put about 120 rounds through it in the last two weeks. I didn't wipe it down before the pics so please excuse some of the grime on it.

This Barnard action looks like a bank vault from behind. There's some beef surrounding that bolt. The 60 deg lift is fast and sewing machine smooth so far. I only use 5 round AICS Mags.

Folding stock makes cleaning and bore sighting a breeze. You see another angle of the Barnard beef. The SS 5X20HD optic is clearer than anything I've looked at in the same price range. I was originally thinking S&B but if I'm running around with this thing I know it is going to get abused. I'd rather fix a bent $1500 scope than a bent $3500 scope

Not a great shot of the bore but I wanted an up close shot to talk about bore sighting with a folding stock... it is a better way period. I was surprised how close you could get with your naked eye and how easy it was to dial in that first shot. I was not only on the paper with my first shot at 100, I was in the 7 ring. Now if I only had remembered my new scope was in mils instead of my trusty MOA, I probably could have zeroed it in 2 shots. Evidently 3 mils is a much larger adjustment than 3 MOA.

The machined channel built to capture the Mac Tilton custom recoil lug. This is a nice close tolerance fit.

Custom recoil lug and more beef evident around the Barnard ejection port

Barnard bolt with substantial 3 lug 60 deg design. This channel on the back of the bolt acts as a scavenge and a repository on the inside of the action. You can see what grime collected over the first 120 shots.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

I have owned two 6XC's and it is my favorite 6mm cartridge. I played around with RL-17 and the speed was great. But it was very inconsistent and never gave me the groups that H4350 gave me.
38.5 and 39.5 being the sweet spots for my two rifles. Rifles were fantastic shooters and gave me consistent 1/4" or better 100 yard groups. Shot my best 1000 yard group to date with the 6XC with a sub 4" five shot group.

I used Norma brass and Wolf primers. I found that seating depth had a pretty big effect on groups. I shot 107 SMK's and 115 DTAC's exclusively.

Great looking rifle. You should have lots of fun with it.

Take care,Stan

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

Nice to see a rifle built with some different components than usual. That action looks like a bank vault. Reminds me of a Witchita BR action l used to own. Should be a great shooter. Waiting for some target pics.

Regards,Paul.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

Thanks guys! I've found that it takes a lot of emotional energy to piece together a custom rifle... so many choices!

I will get some groups and some dot drills up as soon as I get a chance to play with seating depths. While finding the charge weight (somewhere between 38.5 to 39.5 g RL17) I kept the seating depth constant at 0.020" to act as a control. Now that I have a better idea of charge, I'll try 0.040", 0.080", and 0.120" off the lands and see what happens. I've heard a lot of folks have had success around 0.040" off with 115g 6mm projectiles.

Stan- I'll keep an eye out for the inconsistency with RL17. Luckily I also bought 8lbs of H4350 so I'll have to test that too. Were you able to get to 3000-3100fps using 4350 without pressure signs? What was you equivalent H4350 load to a 39g RL17 load speed? 39g RL17 gives me a median of 3040fps. I'm using Wolf primers and Norma brass too.

I have also traded emails with Tom Myers, the engineer of the CG Jackson Mod 22 trigger. He is making me a custom fourth lever that will allow me to seat the trigger shoe deeper into trigger guard facilitating a more comfortable 90deg index finger grip. Take a look at some of the tube guns with CG trigger and you'll see how far back it will sit. Currently, in the AICS chassis, it's almost in the middle of the guard. I've noticed AIAWs and AIAE sit further back in guard than any of the 700 clone brethren. I think that the trigger position adds to the consistency and ease of servicing the target. My TRG can sit real close and I like that feel even though I have large hands. I tore down the rifle this weekend and just sent the trigger group out to him today. He said it should take about a week and I'll be back in business.

My first comp will likely be the Sniper Golf in Maxton,NC and then hopefully Woody's match in April if I can get a spot. I'll keep ya'll updated.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

You use .020" off as a control and stated you were going to shorten up. I have two XC's one on a Sako TRG with a Bartlein the other Stiller Tac30 with a Krieger. Both shoot the best with naked DTAC's in the lands, you may want to try. I run 39.5 RL17 in both the Bartlein a 26" the Krieger a 24. Bartlein runs 3024 Krieger a hair over 3000 fps.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

Very nice rifle writeup and pics. Looks like an awsome gun and neat cartridge. Ive been reading about the 6xc and can see one in my future. I know how you feel about building a custom....Ok maybe not completely as I havent had one built yet but I just bought my first custom rifle built on a Surgeon action and Im on cloud 9 compared to a factory action and complete rifle in general there's just no comparison. Also, just getting started in reloading so another new adventure. Its lots of fun though and the Hide has been great for info and great deals on things Im finding I Need wink wink

Keep shooting and be sure and post some pics of groups once you get a load tuned in Id be interested to see how it continues to do for you.

RL17 Test

4350 Test

I think I'm going with 39.5g of 4350. All groups were 3 shots at 100 yds. The dots are .75". I saw the faintest ejector mark at 40.0 of 4350. I saw 3100+ with RL17 but it looks like the 4350 is more consistent. I didn't get a chance to chrono the 4350 loads. After I run out of 115g Bergers, I'll try the 115g BN DTACS.

Also, I had the CG Jackson trigger custom modified to fit deeper in the AICS chassis and I think the trigger works even better. I'll have to post pictures of that mod when I get a chance.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

I shoot a 243 ai, and in excess of 3100 fps is more than my gun will do I can tell you that with 115's. I use lapua brass and my first initial loading was RL17, I found a couple problems with it it would shoot 3/4" groups at 200 yards but they went to over 5" of vertical spread at 500 yards even more troubling was I would get 1 or 2 shots at the top and the other 1 or 2 at the bottom of that 5" nothing in the middle. the other thing is after 2 loadings the primer pockets were loose trying to push 105's to 3200 fps.

RL17 has been really edgy to me, it aint that temp stable and its well lets call it edgy. I have had a lot better luck with h4831sc and 105's at around 3130fps. your running a smaller case and a heavier bullet I would check how many loadings you get from your brass as your real indicator of pressure signs because my gun the only pressure sign it shows is loose primer pockets. even at that if I get 5 loadings of full house 243 ai I am probably happy with that. most guys would feel thats too hot of a load.

Re: My new 6XC custom... I think it might be love

Here's the modified trigger. Sorry for the crappy cell phone pic. The first lever has been lengthened to position the shoe deeper into the guard. This facilitates an easy 90 deg trigger finger bend and I still have my thumb firmly in the thumbhole. Tom Meyer (CG Jackson engineer) did the mod for me. I did have to relieve a small amount of plastic in the AICS skins with a dremel to make a clearance for the newly positioned trigger. Overall, I'm very happy with it and I felt instantly comfortable with it. If I build another rifle with an AICS I'll definitely order the CG Jackson with this mod to start with.

I got 3180fps with the 40.1g load in the RL17 but you can see it started to open up quite a bit. Well, at least I tried it for myself so now I know and if I ever run out of 4350 and need some in a hurry there is a shop nearby that is always stocked with the RL17... so I can use it as a back up load in an emergency. Maybe I'll do the same thing with 4831.

I wish I could have chono'd the 4350 loads but my friend who has a chrono was out of town. I'm still working through virgin brass so I can't speak to loose primer pockets yet.
