I am cleaning up a used R700 rifle I bought and cannot seem to get the carbon ring out of the barrel. It is right ahead of the chamber and I soaked it for a day with Butch's but can't seem to scrub it out. Any other ideas/cleaners I might try?

Re: Nasty Carbon Ring

Benchrest shooters soak it with carbeurator cleaner for a couple of hours, then use a tight fitting patch from the chamber end and a mild abrasive like J-B Paste, IOSSO, GEM or something in that group. After you finally get it out give a couple of dozen twists every 50 to 100 rounds.

Okay, never heard of Wipe-Out but I see it and other items from the same product family in Sinclair's catalog.

Carb cleaner - is this an aerosol or liquid, any brand special with the BR shooters?

I carry both in my cleaning box. For the spray I just get the discount brand $1.75 a can stuff. (The automotive section of our WallyWorld carries it.) Shooter's Choice bore cleaner is a slightly stronger recipe of the old GM Top Engine cleaner. They changed the formula 3 or 4 years ago and weakened it a bit. The old stuff is no longer available unless someone bought a few cases of it before the change.

Soaking the throat / chamber with either, or both and keep it wet for a few hours. Then wrap a tight patch on a jag and twist away at it. ( I made a special stainless steel 14" cleaning rod with a 4 sided handle "knob" to make it easier to turn.) If you see chunks breaking loose keep doing it until you don't see any more chunks. If the big chunks don't come loose go ahead and start with the abrasive polish like J-B Paste. That should help you get everything out and keep it clean.

I have used as many as 100 twists to get the carbon ring taken care of. But after you get it out it is fairly easy to keep clean. Just give the throat a couple of dozen twists every 40 to 60 rounds. Then clean the chamber & bore as you normall would. (Make sure you get all the abrasive cleaned out.) A light coat of oil and a dry patch and you're good to go.
