Hello my fellow enthusiasts.

I have an old Burris XTR 1-4x24 (2nd gen before XTRii) and was thinking of replacing it with a Vortex strike eagle 1-8x24 that I got on a Labor Day sale. It’s going on a Gen2 Noveske Afghan.

Problem is I’ve noticed that XTR is actually lighter than the strike eagle (when online says the strike eagle is .5oz lighter?) The Strike eagle is shorter in over all length. The glass on the XTR is better than the strike eagle. The XTR eye relief at maximum magnification is more forgiving than the strike eagle. The strike eagle has a 8x max magnification (assuming it would be easier to hit MOA@100yrds). Both have .5moa turret adjustments. The turrets on the strike eagle are slightly better (more audible and springy) the illumination dial rotation (feel) is better on the strike eagle. The illumination dial on the XTR turns off between illumination settings (hash marks between illumination numbers) and the strike eagle illumination has to be dialed all the way up or down. Oh and both are SFP (if that matters)

Do I just keep the old set up with the XTR14 or should I go with the new strike eagle?

Thanks in advance

I have ALWAYS hated BDC scopes. They never seemed to work.

But with that being said I took a chance on a Primary Arms 1-6 with the ACSS reticle and could not be happier. Once zeroed it makes getting hits in steel trivial out to 600 yards. They also make on in 1-8 and the have SFP and FFP. I prefer SFP so the horseshoe remains large at 1x.

It also has the ability to range estimate based on shoulder width or height. It has lead marks as well although I have never used them.

Primary Arms has a great warranty as well even though I have never had to use it. I cannot say the same for Vortex.

I have both ranges. I voted for the 1-8x. Once you shoot with the 8x, you don't want the 4x anymore.

I use my 1-X optics at 1x and at full magnification. I don't really have much use for the in between. At 1x, I want a good combat reticle and quick target acquisition. At full mag, I want clarity and accuracy. The circle dot reticle of the Strike Eagle does both well and the glass is decent enough even at 8x.
