new to the long range bolt action shooting , but been shooting all kinds of others... an have exp.

lookin at the 700s either
aac-sd or
police or
should i spring for the
milspec 5r

i like the aac most due to great low price n have taken much advice already on the twist (1/10)
that being said goal is to work up to 1000 yds one day
cash moneys are not the biggest factor but did want to put more towards a nf or leupold er/t or lr/t
any advice would be grateful on any of these products ive just listed apologize ahead if any rediculous mistakes or leftouts thx guys

Re: Need advise on which stick to order

i'd go with the 700P or the 5R (with a bias towards the 5R)

the stock is a major reason why. the 700P and 5R come with HS Precision stocks.

hogue stocks aren't known for being rigid. i know the AAC comes pillar bedded, but pillars won't make the stock any better.

my bias towards the 5R is because it's made from stainless steel. just have it coated or krylon it yourself and you'll have yourself a very capable rifle.

Re: Need advise on which stick to order

I'd buy the SPS Tactical AAC-SD, throw away the flimsy Hogue stock, put a Bell & Carlson Tactical Medalist on it and call it good. I'd have the same action plus the 1:10 twist, but be in it for less $ than the 700P.

Take the money you were going to spend on a rifle and sign up for a basic course at a good school. Rent a rifle for the course. By the end of the course you will have a better idea about what you want and why you want it.

Big +1 to the above, you can rent a gun and put a few hundred rounds down range and get a good grip on what you need from your rifle, plus the training will be a good step in the right direction when you finally do want to start shooting longer ranges.

Re: Need advise on which stick to order

I have to agree with the guys recommending the 5R or Police (stainless is better in my book). I prefer longer barrels in the 11.25:1 or 12:1 twist.

I shoot 168-178 grain bullets and those twists seem to work the best for me. I shoot a 700 Stainless fluted 26" .308 bbl in my AICS and it likes 168's out to 600 yards.

Re: Need advise on which stick to order

Get a Savage 110 BAS. Nice rifles very accurate out of the box, all they need pretty much is good glass and ammo and your good to go. Even a Savage 10fp is a accurate rifle out the box. It is kind of funny to me that most folks always go Remington I understand why but there are other great rifles out there for less money.

Yep. Thanks for your service, BTW.

+1 5R is a solid choice.
