Need help deciding new bolt gun caliber

Need help between 6.5 CM and .308.

Gun to be used for target shooting out to 1000. It's to be my 338lm's little brother. Just looking for advice on caliber I'm going with a savage to build off of thanks

Second 6.5 Creedmoor. I know the 260's are popular. There are tons of threads on the 260, 6.5 creedmoor and 6.5x47 and .308 differences/similarities on this site. 6mm website has great information on all of them. But, of the two you identified, my preference is the 6.5 due to the lesser recoil and slightly better ballistics. You can't go wrong with either caliber.

12LRP is a great value for an out-of-the-box rifle, though the barrel is a Savage Bull contour (ie. heavy). You can always have a smith cut it down if you decide that prudent.

I'd completely skip the 11 Trophy Hunter XP, as they have the bottom bolt release and Axis-style DBM integrated into the stock. If you want a donor rifle, get an 11 Hunter XP (they come with steel DBM like the LRP, though lack Accutrigger) and you can build it up appropriately.

Can't build off the hunter xp ? I have found stocks for them barrels ect .... Just figured you could start off with the hunter xp and build as you go

You can...its just not as easy as less expensive models, ie. less value as a donor than the cheaper 11 Hunter XP or a Stevens 200.

What's the point of buying a DBM rifle if you can't put the DBM in a new stock? With the 11 Trophy Hunter XP you'd have to buy the steel DBM or aftermarket metal unless you switch to a chassis.

I personally detest the bottom bolt release actions and would buy used if necessary to avoid it. Thankfully the S200, Hunter XP and Hog Hunter still use top/side release actions.

I'd go 260, but if that's not an option, then 308. Component availability is a big factor for my builds. Hornady has a stranglehold monopoly on factory ammo and reloading brass. I like being able to neck up or down common cartridges to get 260.

Considering the badassery of a 338 really begins to show at ~1000 yards, and the badassery of a 308 ends at ~600, you'll wind up with a ~400 yard zone between 600 and 1000 that you don't have a well matched rifle for, if you choose 308.

Not to say a 308 won't go 1000, of course it will...but the 6.5 will do it MUCH better.

Not to say a 338 can't be used under 1000, but it's rather pointless to fling $5 bills at targets inside 1000, when $1.25 bills (6.5creed) do great.

The easy choice here is a 6.5.

It's not even cheaper to run 308 anymore.

Well I have a .06 rem 700 (hunting rig passed down) 6.8 spc ar 2 223/556 ars 338 lapua wife has a tc venture .308 that's her hunting rig ... I'm looking for something more fun to push past 500 but no further then 1k I am open to other calibers tho and rifles ..

Reason for me picking those two rounds is easy reloading I'm kinda new at it and the 6.5 yes is really owned by hornady but I've had good luck with their bullets and brass... The 308 is just been tried and true ... Every house in America should have atleast one .308 ...
