I just bought a Rem 700 5R in 308. I also bought a NF 5.5x22x50 and Seekins rings and 20 MOA mount. Ive mounted $100 scopes on .22s before but I dont want to touch this set up. Its my first long range rig and I want a pro to do the set up (and hopefully show me how its done). Im an hour south east of Columbus OH. Is there any good guys in the area that I can have set up my rifle?

Like others have said "not rocket science". Follow the info on that link. Take the time to make sure everything is right as you do each step. Once it's on take pains to make sure it's tracking perfectly verticle thru it's full range.

Would the fact that your scope probably cost more than my total competition gun/mount/stock/scope deter me from putting it on myself...... not for a second. You'll learn more doing it yourself and if it gets a couple scratches smile and view them as battle scars. Guess I'm not into pretty but functional. Know ya want it to be perfect but you'll have to learn to tweak and possibly adjust it later so might as well do it from the start. Chances are who ever puts it on for you won't be able to get it perfect the first time and you'll be making multiple trips back for slight adjustments when you do your sighting in/verticle tracking and box test.

Good luck and have fun, you'll be much prouder when it's all done and be able to explain the whole process of how and why you did it and understand how it was done. Not to belittle a gun shop that may install it for you but most are not competitors or understand how to tweak and set it up for your use. You have to understand how to use your tools to use them effectively.

Re: Need scope mounting help in central OH

All previous posts are spot-on. Scope mounting is not difficult, but as with any "precision" endeavor, the "right tools" are critical. Get a good torx set or required bits, and torque wrench.

One step overlooked is checking the receiver threads - run the mount screws (or tap) to chase the tapped holes to ensure there are no burrs. Follow Seekins mounting instructions regarding blue locktite around the screw and between the base and receiver.

You don't need an optical boresighter (spend the money on a torque wrench). Draw a crosshair (+) across a paper plate with the + turned 45 deg (resembling an X). This will give better resolution for the center without concern for the target alignment. With a steady rest, look through the bore at a target, and dial it in.

Go for it - don't let someone do what you can!

I already have a Wheeler torque wrench and the Wheeler levels will be here soon. I didnt get any instructions with my Seekins mount or rings. Does anyone have a link or a PDF file with the Seekins info?

Re: Need scope mounting help in central OH

You just spent a ton of money. And it sounds to me like you want to get it right. I do not blame you a bit. Some people are just not mechanical, so you get flamed for that??

Find a good quality gunsmith in your area. And have him install your scope that you might have close to $2,000 in. I would not blame you a bit. It actually sounds smart.

You can work your way through it if you want to, but don't pay any attention to anyone calling you names because you want to properly install a high quality piece of equipment. Heck you have more money in that rig than 1/2 the cars here in WV.

Watch the gunsmith, and ask questions. Next time you will be prepared. Tom.

Scroll down to "Q: How do you install a base and what Torque specs do you recommend base screws?"

This should do it.

Thanks Bro, It will be mounted tomorrow if time allows.

Re: Need scope mounting help in central OH

Well its on there. I ran 20 rounds of Tubbs Final Finish through it following the instructions. The 5R has one stiff ass trigger. My LTR breaks at half (so it seems)of what the 5R does. So...trigger job or new trigger? Now for the next question, can someone give me a link for the protocol to shooting the "box" to see if everything is tracking true.
Thanks for all your help.
