Hello, first off, I have been finding some very valuable info from the members here at snipers hide for a good while now, so i decided to become a member. Just want to say thanks for the valuable info ive seen so far without even asking a question!

Now to the part where i need advice. I want to buy a new rifle but I am torn in between exactly what I should do.
I am 21 and this is my list of current firearms.
Mak 90
Waffen werks ak 74
MOssberg 500
Dan wesson CBOB 10mm
S&w m&p 40
Remington 1100
Hi-point 45 (beat up gun for the woods)
Mosin nagant 91/30

I plan on buying the kel tec rfb 24 inch whenever i can get my hands on one next winter, then also a 6.8 spc ar-15 sometime next winter also.

after that given knowledge, I want to either buy a 6.5 grendel ar-15 and mount a 4-12 scope on it. Or either buy a remington 700 in 338 rum and mount a 6-20 scope on it.

Im not sure which to go with, and just need a opinion on what you guys would do if you were me!
Thank you!

Re: Need some opinions for a new member please!

If you're dead-set on one of the two rifles you list, I'd go with the Grendel. Use it to work on building fundamentals and have fun. The 338 RUM will beat the snot out of you and more than likely induce bad habits.

However, if it were me, I'd look for a good 308 bolt gun and work from there. Lots of quality ammo that's readily available for reasonable prices.

Thanks Petey!
Yes i realize the 338 rum does has some nice recoil to it, but i have shot some 375 rum before, 338 lapua, and a few others on a quite a few occasions. i have already practiced good habits because my other family members own a few 308's, 300 win mag etc. shot them quite well. I am obviously by no means a amazing shot or any thing, but i have taken my time before stepping up to a magnum type high powered rifle and i feel im ready, and not to mention i do plan on buying a 308 sometime within the year. but obviously the grendel sounds appealing, being able to carry a decent ranged cartridge with 25 shots lol

What're your intentions for the rifle?

Grendel is not bad, long range target shooting, or medium sized game at reasonable distances. 338RUM is fine, if you reload, or want a hunting rifle, as factory loaded ammunition choices are limited. Also unless you want to have the rifle built, I don't think you'll find a heavy barrel precision rifle chambered in it. I don't care who you are extended range sessions with a sub 10lb 338 mag hunting rifle will beat the shit out of you, that might not instill bad habits in you, but it does in most.

I think the intial decision to make is whether you want a bolt gun or a semi auto and go from there, this is kinda an apples to oranges situation.
