Hello fellas.new guy on the block and way not advanced as you guys but some of your knowledge may rub off on me to make me a better shooter. Also I'm a working class guy and can't afford the finest in equipment.Mostly surplus.Have an sks yugo now so I know it's limitations.I recently purchased a bayo mount bipod and some say if it is connected to the barrell it degrads accuracy.True or false? Also is it feasable to use a bipod sitting at a bench(can't get right behind it cause they don't allow prone at my range) Thank you.

Re: new and out of my league

Thank you for the warm welcome. Thanks for the offer but some thing facinates me about these old commie weapons.I love the history of old stuff.Just trying to become somewhat of a better shooter with it.At 62 the eyes ain't what they used to be and I've been away fron long guns for a long, long time. There is an inexpensive 4x scope on it which helps.I figure a bipod was worth a try rather then bags. Also, even at 62 I can appreciate the cool factor of a pod.Lol.

Fez

your chain is being pulled. The SKS is not a precision rifle by any means.

Yes you can use a bipod on the bench.

Yes mounting anything to the barrel degrades the accuracy.

You need to just start reading. Look at the rifle pic's and you will see no bipods hooked to the barrel of a rifle. Get on the training thread pay the dues and read and learn.

If you want to learn marksmanship read and training trhead and get you a accurate .22lr and scope and a 20moa mount and learn to drive it out to 250 yards.

Re: new and out of my league

Yes,I realized my chain was being pulled(it's a long one)and it's been pulled before, many times.I take it in good nature. And yes I plan on doing all things mentioned except paying right now.Wife is sick and I'm the only one working .I do have a marlin60 with a 3-9x scope which is decent.May pod her out.To the stock of course.I like you khooks. To the point. No detours.

Re: new and out of my league

Welcome to the hide, fez.

Like khooks said, this forum is a HUGE resource and you will find tons of info on here. Just find some time to sit back, read, and become a better marksman.

Don't allow prone!? Can you shoot sitting, kneeling or standing? What good it doing all your shooting from the bench, unless you're a benchrest competitor?

By the way, welcome to the Hide.

Re: new and out of my league

Glad u take it in good nature.
Ole shankster had just pulled someone elses chain
on another site about a yugo! I just couldn't pass
up a lil well meant humor.
Again welcome to the hide.

I have a marlin glenfield model 60.
Hard for me to believe, just doing the math,
but I've had that little rifle for 28 years.
Ok. Now I depressed myself! Lol. I'm gettin old!

Re: new and out of my league

natty,it's a public range(my tax dollars at work).Very static, set distances 100 yards out the deepest.Alot of rules(very politically correct) no targets that look too human.I guess thay have to cover their butts in this uber legal world we live in.but it is cheap.8 bucks and you can shoot all day and switch from pistol to rifle range with no hassel. With the price of ammo(sigh,I don't reload yet) this "hobby" can get expensive real fast. But it won't stop me because I love it.I'll do the best I can with what I've got.No exposed shooting all done on or behind a bench.

Re: new and out of my league

netranger6 on this range there is a secondary wood "wall" about 12 yards out so they is no way to get a clear shot out to the target from prone. You can only shoot at 50 or 100 yards.that is where the wooden frames are set where you attach your target. If you want to shoot at 100 yds you pickup your frame when the line is cold at carry it to the 100 yd station.Quite restrictive but that is all that is available. There is a private range and I don't know how it is set up but it is cost resrictive for me.Between initiation fee and first year fee it's about 600 bucks to start up.To rich for my blood right now.By the way I cliped the wall a couple of times when I couldn't find enough sand bags to get my rifle high enough the first time there. To the consternation of the range nazi---er officer.Quite embarassing.Lol.

Re: new and out of my league

Welcome aboard! I have one of those Yugo 59/66 SKS's I picked up as new, unissued, with 2 sets of all the little goodies that come with them (even the original log book).... Worst part was getting all the cosmoline off it! A steam cleaner goes a long way in making relatively quick work of this though..LOL! She still sweats the stuff out when it gets warm! Fun & cheap to shoot, especially if you reload.... Mine is just like a woman...never know what's she's gonna do from one day till the next! With handloads, I consider it a good day if she holds 2 moa @ 100... Never expected much from it (considering the whopping $89 I paid for it at a funshow), so she hasn't let me down! Always wanted to try the grenade launcher that's made for it that you shoot with blanks. Have seen video of them being used like that & the shooter put the butt of the rifel on the ground to fire it...

As for practicing your marksmanship skills, you're better off with the .22 lr IMHO... Getting 2 moa out of my SKS only happens when the stars are aligned just right! LOL! My .22's are much more consistent and at distance will teach you a lot about wind reading real fast!

Enjoy!

Re: new and out of my league

Thanks Wildbill.I do alternate using my 22's(22/45,marlin60,tangofolio six shooter) because you can't beat the price of ammo. But I gotta shoot the big boys.My Mosin m44 kicks like a mule. The pop-pop of the 22 just doesn't compare with the BANG-BANG of the commie tanks.Don't get me wrong I want to improve but sometimes I just want to have fun.If I can convince my wife I would like to move to a secluded area in Montana or Wyoming with a big mountain behind my house. In the am with a fresh cup of coffee on my deck start blasting cans, dishes, targets etc etc with no worries. If I do alittle gunsmithing I can test it out right away without waiting to get to the range.Ahh,dreaming is so nice.If I could only hit that lottery.Lol.

Re: new and out of my league

I just made the move you're dreaming of, but to my own little mountain in West-By-God-Virginia! Recently retired & loving my little piece of paradise!! I just need to add another window to the side of my garage and I won't even have to leave the house anymore!!

Again, welcome! Some great info & people to be found here!

What part of Flordia are you from or located. If you want send me a PM. Just wondering if you would like to come up to some of the match I shoot in Alabama if your not to far south and when you get things panned out with your family.

Makes me appreciate our public ranges here in Missouri that much more. I drive 20 miles to an unmanned range on a conservation area. It's free and self policed. Can shoot rifle at 25, 50 and 100 yards. Solid benches provided, but you can shoot from whatever position you want. I like to get there early in the morning and have the place to myself for awhile (not near any large metro areas).

Charleston 'eh? My wife is from Rainelle, just north of Beckley and south of Lewisburg. May be heading that way this year. Her family lives on top of their mountain, bad ass country up there.
