Night Vision New Armasight Units (Sidekick and Jockey 640s)

IMG_0580.jpeg

I’m new to the realm of thermals, so bear with me, but is this saying the Jockey does not require collimating to your day optic?

‘The Jockey 640 easily mounts in front of your existing 1-6x day scope with no additional zeroing required’

I'm looking to like the Sidekick 640 with proper settings too. I really want to like it but it's falling short. Blooms when going from terrain, trees etc. to near the sky line. Tried a variety of settings but it still doesn't look as good as an old 384 I have. Granted the 384 has a 35mm lens but is 1x and does clip on, weapon scope and scanner, just to heavy for helmet mount. Am I missing something? I have 5095 firmware.
I had that issue but it's dependent on the settings. I operate mine on the Detect and Forest settings, I think decreasing gain on detect so that there is less bloom when looking up. Got to find those porcupines in the trees.

How do I adjust the settings on the presets like "Forest" and "Detect"? I was under the impresion that the settings on the left side of the screen only apply to "Default" setting on the right side. If I can get rid of the blooming I'll keep the sidekick 640. Also do you see faint lines on the disply even after nucing?

Nope! They apply to whatever setting you have on the preset at the time you mess with them.

Thanks! Just found that out messing with it. Can't get rid of all the blooming but I think that's what you have to live with with that 19mm lens and large 24 deg FOV. It's just not as apparent in my old Incendis 384 becaus it has a 35mm lens and smaller 10.7 deg FOV so it's more forgiving. But that Sidekick 640 is small and handy so it's going on my helmet.

When I get a chance I will try to take a pic of my settings to see if that helps.

I apparently suck at searching, can anyone confirm the butler creek scope cap size that will fit the eyepiece lens on the sidekick 640? I measured at 33.98mm, which looks like a size 03 object lens cap which is 34mm. for transporting in a pouch I don't think I want an eyepiece cap with the flip up lever, thanks!

edit, I confirmed the 03 fits.

Is anyone running the sidekick 640 with the ravyn bridge and a PVS14? I'm looking for a pouch it will fit in for using with a chest rig, or on a battle belt, that kind of thing. I medium pouch I bought from spiritus isn't wide enough, especially not with the padding insert. It doesn't seem like any of the pouches I currently have are wide enough, except for the one my pvs-14 from TNVC came in. Curious how other people are transporting it attached to kit.

Yes, I am running that setup. I run them in a milspec pvs14 pouch. Both fit in on the bridge fine together. I am not attaching to my chest right though. It would be too large for the spiritual fanny pouch that hangs beneath my chest right, at least on the bridge.

Candidly that setup is either staying on my helmet or I'm running goggles and tossing the sidekick into the pouch in smaller form.

The Arbor Arms large pouch should fit it, I have a 14 and StingIR on the Ravyn bridge.

I can double check when I get home tonight.

So...I just snagged one. Firmware 5115. Can anyone supply settings and preset best for pairing with an L3 WP SG tube 14 in a Rayvn? Also, JW, others, has anyone tested actual fps of latest update? Further...does fps vary based on setting?

I haven't cracked the code yet. What is the current answer for a Clip On thermal on a flip to the side mount for placing in front of my Vortex LPVO? I found all kinds of thermals, but none with the flip to the side mount for Picatinny rails. A little help?

Are you asking where to place it? (how far in front?) or something else?

I use my RH25 in a Wilcox FTS and place it as close as I can in front of my Razor 1-10. I've been using it on my 13.5 308 MWS and out to 400yd on deer and pigs.

Hold my beer and listen up. :)

So I have never owned nor looked through a Nox 18 or RH-25. But have some time on friends BAE units and a lot of time on Flir Boson units that I own. Some limited time on other various flavors.

I received my 2nd updated Sidekick 640 a couple of days ago and have been running it through its paces. I also have the luxury of putting a 3x 62mm Torrey Pines Logic Magnifier on the Sidekick 640. Here are my thoughts and findings.

So this morning it started out at 90% humidity and 100 percent cloudy. Poor emissivity conditions. The Sidekick performed very well and gave very good detail on both buildings, vehicles, people etc and also did the same on rural terrain where most items (trees, bushes, grass etc) are typically at about the same emissivity. This was with and without the 3x Magnifier attached. Around 11.00 am it started raining and has rained all day and is still raining heavily tonight.

So tonight in heavy rain I have been viewing all of the same scenery as I did this morning. All of this scenery has had hours and hours of rain on it. During my viewing just a little while ago during heavy rain it was stunning to me on how good of an image the Sidekick was producing. Additionally when you put a big lens 3x Magnifier on any (1x native mag) unit it enables you to evaluate the FPA and core ability to form images at much longer distance. You are better able to assess the sharpness, contrast, etc and overall image produced at longer ranges. The Sidekick surpassed all of my expectations. I was very impressed in what this little unit can do.

Like any thermal device you have to spend time in different emissivity conditions to learn how to adjust the settings of any particular device to get the maximum performance it is capable of achieving. A quality device has plenty of individual settings one can adjust to optimize its best performance under the present conditions you are working in.

In pouring down rain the following settings worked excellent for me.

First I turn off the Compass and Inclinometer that show on the Ocular Screen. This will give the CPU more HOSS-POWA because it offloads work the CPU would otherwise have to devote power too.

Contrast - 22
Sharpness - 9
Brightness - 5
Gamma - 10
Gain - 0
NUC Auto - ON
Picture in Picture Off

Now usually I will let the unit warm up with NUC on Auto and then once warmed up, switch over to manual so its not NUC' ing as frequently as it does. This lets me decide when to NUC to improve any image degradation.

I am not noticing any perceived lag or jerkiness in the unit. To me the two single most important adjustments with this unit that have a really big impact on performance and image quality are Gamma and Gain. This unit is very sensitive to increases in Gain and the image will get grainy fast if you have the Gain jacked up too high. In poor conditions I have found that increasing the Gamma and decreasing the Gain results in a much better image and detection of critters still remains good.

The Sidekick may not exactly be a NOX 18, Skeet or Voodoo, but it is one hell of a very compact good performer for its price point and really not far behind what they bring to the table due to the inherent limitations of a 1x wide FOV spotter. A 1x spotter can only do so much no matter who makes it and their range is limited, unless you can easily attach a big ass 62 mm 3x Magnifier lens on it.

I have tried to take some photos and video with my Cell Phone through the lens, but that is not working out to be anywhere representative of what I am actually seeing so I would not want to slander what the Sidekick is capable of producing. Stokes and JW are the ones that have the ability to capture through the lens images most representative of devices.
Thank you, bro; I was struggling until I came across your post. It's like Gain and Gamma are the true clarity for the thermal. Bro saved me so much time. I just made a few changes to the gain and gamma, and she is crystal clear on my Jockey. Thanks again. A lot of people on the net always talk about LPVO I run mine on a NF 2.5x20 up to about 8 power!
