New rifle.....New Shooter....tikka gets it done!

Good evening all,

Never shot a bolt action rifle before....bought a tikka CTR, mounted a Bravo Chassis and replaced the trigger spring. Considering that I have no clue what I’m doing I think the rifle performed exceptionally at 100 yards! Should be able to tighten my groups going forward. See pics.

Nice work! You may want to double check to make sure that your receiver/recoil lug are seated it looks like something is off there.

You've got good eyes - I did not notice the upward cant of the action until your post mentioned it.

As you tighten the rear screw the rear part of the chassis comes down a little. The only way for the 2 pieces of the chassis to be completely aligned is to avoid tightening down the back screw. If torqued to specs it drops a little. Is that what you are referring to?

Some of these may seem ignorant, but I'm a CQB glock and AR guy just getting a long range itch..

Why did you choose the tikka over a rem 700?
Why did you choose the bravo over the X-ray (or the others but theyre more expensive)
Other than the trigger spring - Is this essentially all stock tikka parts ie barrel, bolt assembly etc?
Do you think you could have bought a barrel and bolt assembly and saved any cash as opposed to buying a whole gun and now having extra parts? Are there any parts you know after shooting that you wish you'd have upgraded, or plan to?
How did you decide on the caliber for the build? I considered 6.5 and some others but my gut keeps telling me stick to .308? no?

Sorry about all this but I'm balls deep into finalizing something very similar lol.

So.....I’m the same....all cqb stuff with AR and Glock. This is my first bolt action rifle and I seriously know nothing about them. My father in law suggested the tikka....I saw the bravo and thought it looked cool and had good reviews....I got the trigger spring because I thought the lighter the pull the better since I don’t know what I’m doing that will avoid me doing weird movements when pulling the trigger. Only thing is that I set the trigger where it is almost too light. I would tighten the screw for the spring a little but after the results I might keep it this way. I didn’t pick the 700 because many reviews claim the tikka action is smoother.

Maybe it's the lighting in your photograph, but it appears that there is a gap between the receiver and the chassis near the receiver/barrel union. I have uploaded a picture of mine to highlight that the angle of the receiver to the chassis should be consistent along its length and that there should be no gap. Your setup makes it look like the recoil lug is not set in the receiver groove correctly, causing your rifle to sit barrel high. But, again, maybe it's just the lighting in your photo.

Check the angle between the top of the chassis and receiver (use the point on the receiver created by the intersection of the two flat faces on the receiver for reference) . In the pictures you posted you can see that they are not parallel, which indicates the receiver isn't seated on the recoil lug in the chassis.

It definitely looks like the recoil lug isnt sitting in the chassis correctly. I know from experience. I did the same exact thing when I dropped my tikka into a KRG the first time.

That looks correct. The key is, when you are mounting the action to the chassis you can feel the lug slot into place and the action drop in. Kinda locks/slots into place. Have to move it around a bit until you get there. Then just torque down the action screws making sure the action is pushed back (the direction recoil will send it) and youre good to go. You can feel it slot in.

Looks like you fixed it. Another way you can tell is its fixed, is looking at the barrel in relation to the forearm. In the older pictures you can see a lot of space between the barrel and the forearm, the barrel and forearm should run parallel to each other. Barrel shouldn't be angled upwards.. if that makes sense.
