New SPS 308 shaving cases

I recently purchased a rem 700 SPS in 308. As soon as the the very first round was fired I noticed an immense amount of brass on the bolt face and the brass around the primer looked like it was taking serious amounts of brass off the cases. This goes for anything I shoot out of it. The marks (staring straight of the bottom of the case) go from the 2-5oclock position and then the 8-11 o clock position. There is so much brass (or failure in some regard) that the ejector gets clogged and will no longer eject the case. Does anyone know why this might happen? Possibly a terribly crooked bolt to receiver fit? Guns still under warranty and its a project rifle I have planned to be reworked by GAP or LA Precision anyway.

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

I have tried both. Ive tried reload with different powder and charges. There appears to be no difference between min and near max charges. Chrono confirms they are very light loads. It almost appears as if the bolt face is grossly not squart with action and its shaving brass off every shot.

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

this seems pretty common in sps's, although ive never experienced as much brass as you are describing.

the feed lips in mine cut gouges in the cases when fed from the magazine. is that what is happening to yours?

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

yes it is cutting gouges in the the rim of the case but that's not really the problem. its shaving massive quantities off the part of the case that reads "Nosler 308 Win" and those shavings are getting stuck in the ejector and clogging it up. Its like what the heck

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

so its taking brass off of the actual back of the case, like where the primer is? thats odd. ive seen the feed lips scratch, and the extractor gouge the rim but never heard of this. ill let someone else chime in on this one

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

It sounds like the head space is to short forcing the head of the case back against the bolt face and causing the shaving you described. The first thing I would do is have the head space checked with a go and no go gauge to see if that's the problem and go from there. Or just send it back to Remington with brass shavings in plce and a few caases to help the trouble shooting,

Re: New SPS 308 shaving cases

I hope you get your problem resolved. I've seen this happen on a rifle with incorrect head space before. The rear of the case looked like it had cicular swirls on it and the action was difficult to operate. Good luck with your rifle. If you have to send your rifle back make sure to ask for them to issue a call tag so you don't have the hassle of haaving to do the shipping. Let us know what happens.
