New to me Savage Model 12 CAL

This rifle is in 223 with a 20" bull barrel. Both action and it are blued, not SS. It has the usual black and not so atractive synthetic stock with an accutrigger but the barrel needs a little bluing work at the business end (someone tried to touch it up but didn't get it right and thus far I can't either).

My questions, 1) are these accurate 223s? 2) the trigger is smooth but breaks at 2lbs 9oz, how to I adjust it down? 3) what's the best cold blue solution for an even factory like blue? I used Vans last night but it's not getting it done. BTW what's the barrel twist 4) What year manufacture is this rifle and what is it worth?

I'd very much appreciate your info as I've not been able to find much on the net for that particular model. I've put on it a 6x24 Osprey scope with quick disconnect rings on it and it makes for a good looking rig but I've not zeroed or shot yet.

The action's off but I don't see an adjustment screw anywhere on the trigger group. Is there a pic available?

I found articles on how to but the rifle didn't come with the adjustemnt tool so I guess I'll have to call Savage Monday.

Welcome to shooting Savage rifles! For the price you paid even if it doesn't shoot good you can rebarrel it and still not be out too much money.

I appreciate the welocme jf11 but why wouldn't it shoot well? They're supposed to be accurate rifle from what I've been reading.

On my end I'll just have to determine and reload the round it likes. Any suggestions?

2lbs 9oz not 2.5lbs but that's close enough I guess. Non-the-less, if it's meant to be adjustable I'd like to be able to adjust.

Well, since 2 lbs 8 oz is the same as 2.5 lbs and considering the tolerence of the trigger pull gage, I would consider 2 lb 9 oz to be a trigger set a 2.5 lbs.

If you want to go lower, have at it, it is your rifle and your preference. I was just saying the is no "need" to go lighter.

you really don't need the specific tool from savage, it's just a round pin with a slot cut in it like a flathead screw's slot... that's a model 12 FV cut down I'm sure, if it was a LE series it would have a dull finish and a blacked out bolt... it originally came with a 26" bbl... you trigger is advertised to adjust down to 1.5#... it will be +/- a hair. the model 12s run a little less the te LE rifles new... add tactical to he name, black it out and raise the price....lol

since it has more than likely been cut down, that would be why it "might" not shoot, it probably will, but if it doesn't, have it recrowned right quick and try again.

I don't see a slot whatsoever, just a spring but I will retry to turn it with a small flat screw driver.

force, I surely hope it was not cut down but now it makes perfect sense as to why the barrel's end was poorely reblued. How easy is it to recrown and how much should it cost?

You won't be able to adjust it with a screw driver, you need a special tool. If the guy you bought it from didn't include it/doesn't have it, you will have to get another from Savage.

If anyone else has the same type of rifle and can take pics of the crown we can compare and determine if mine's factory or not. I will also send pics to Savage, they ought to be able to give me the real skinny. BTW, this barrel is 20" on the nose.

Folks, there's no need for additional pics, I called Savage and got the requisite info. This is indeed a May 2008 12FV manufactured originally with a 26" barrel so it's been cut but lets see how it'll shoot before I tackle possible mods or further tunning. The barrel is only $133 from Savage, and easy to replace worst come to worst. I do like the shorty though so I hope it's a shooter.

Savage CS is great, they commited to send me the trigger adjustment tool, free of charge.

I have a savage 10FP with a 24inch HB that is glassed in a B&C stock, has sss trigger adjusted down to 1.8 lbs (i believe), and burris xtr steeel bases badger rings and a SS10X42M scope.

It will shoot one whole with 5 rounds at 100yds with good ammo.
and it is .223

they can be great shooters with a little bit of work.
and shoot good out of the box as well.

You probly wont be dissapointed.

That's my savage 12 .223 I'd say yours has been cut.

Mine is capable of sub MOA groups with just a choate stock on it. I'm upgrading to a manners t4 soon. But yes I would say they are pretty accurate.

The twist on mine is 1-9"

just a note. the LE models, the 10 series will adjust to 1.5 pounds and everything else is 2.5 except the target series (red blade) and that will go down to 6 oz.

Looks exactly like my 12FV in .223, great shooting rifle with 75 Amax's. Twist is actually something like 1:8.6. The barrel has definitely been cut down.

I'd like to see how she shoots when you get it figured out.

Today I had sometime to play with the Savage stock. Yes it's not a high priced stock but after a bit of elbow grease to alleviate the sharp plastic edges and seams, and some proper action fitting, I believe that the barrel is free floating enough to where there should never be pressure points applied to cause the occasional flyer. I've read on other forums that the forearm may also be a bit flexible so I believe an aluminum rod, properly inserted in it, should alleviate this problem as well. We'll see if these simple fixes can eliminate the need for a high priced, aftermarket alternative. I sure hope so.

Has anyone else around here modified the Savage stock for the better? If so please explain.

Also how can I remove the fixed/captured magazine clip? There appears to be only one retaining clip but I don't want to force it and break anything.

Many people say it pops out without too much effort.

I could not get mine out without fear of bending it, so I gave up.

You have a couple of very decent options:
A choate Tactical (not the ultimate var or sniper) or the B&C varmint/tactical.
They are both a bit on the heavy side, but rock solid and they both coast about 225 bucks.

julio do you have any pictures to provide to help me visualize in detail how you did this? Sounds like a project I'd be interested in.

In the mean time here's pics of the two bulls of mine. No doubt my 5R's H&S is a good stock but spendy so lets see how we can mod the Savage for the better.

Well gents, in between my hunting today I was able to get the Savage/scope on paper and do 3 groups of 5 at 50 yards. I'd say this rifle's a keeper "as is" wouldn't you? True enough it's been cut to 20" with no 11 deg chamfer and wears a taperware stock with an accutrigger and yet it's a no bull shooter. Lets see what she'll do at 100 and 150 tomorrow.

Ok guys, in case this helps someone else, the 12FV in 223 is a true 1 in 9 twist and 69gr projectiles is what Savage recommends to feed through it. Also, the action screws need to be tightened to 25 inch pounds, or snug, as she puts it.

Tomorrow's the big day, it's going to the GS for go/no go and crown checks.

Yes, they are almost ALWAYS great shooters. Seems to me that the cut/crown job is a good one. There is nothing wrong with the stock you have, and doing a few odds and ends to it will only make it better.

I think your setup is pretty slick. I like it alot, and it seems to me that you are partial to it as well... Welcome to the Wonderful World of Savage... enjoy your stay!!

mnshort, yes I did because after all it's a paper target not the real thing :)

z7 thank you for the kind words. What corrections are you recommending, I am very much interested in your inputs.

OK guys, after a number of corrective actions on the mounts, rings and replacing the scope with a 16X super sniper, a known quantity, I took the rifle to my GS for a crown check. He did hand chamfer it a bit but said that the barrel was professionally cut so I guess tomorrow we'll see whether or not this Savage of mine can shoot the 1/4 inch groups, as it should.

NOW THAT's MORE LIKE IT!!

My Savage rifle finally shot as it ought to, I'll post pics of the targets later. Gotta say, and as Savage recommended, it loves shooting the 69gr Sierra MK bullet. Needless to say I am one happy camper, finally! All it took was hand chamfer the barrel, tightening the action to the stock at 25"lbs and also tightening up the scope/rings/mounts. I had forgotten how nice a scope the SWFA 16X super sniper is.

Changing out the scope was going to be my 1st recommendation to say the least. Super Snipers are definately good to go in my book. I have owned 3 of them, and I have never had a bad thing to say about them, other than being fixed powers.

The stock mods revolve solely around stiffening, and the link you got from AXE will serve you well. My 10FPLE came with the "less than appreciated" tupperware stock. The stock you have still needs the stiffening mods done to it, but it is better than the previous factory stocks. My factory tupperware without any mods to it at all, was still a laser beam of a shooter.

From the looks of your accutrigger spring, I don't see the bent tab that the accutrigger tool would use to adjust it. That is not a big deal, as it is just as easy to adjust by turning the spring with your fingers. Increasing the weight is a tad bit more difficult than decreasing the weight. I am sure that you will be decreasing the weight if you need to do any adjusting at all. Shoot it as it is, and let the results give you directions.

I am really glad to hear she is performing for ya!! This just adds another shooter to the list of happy Savage Brothers!!

z7, today's grouping (a bit over 1/4 MOA at 80 yards, and that's because I didn't hold it better), definitely warrants stiffening the stock's forearm to improve performance. I plan to shoot it at 150 yards tomorrow to see if the groupings remain small. I truly hope this 223 Savage will make my 308 5R the perfect stable partner.

There is one thing I don't like about this rifle though, I would have preferred it if it had a removable magazine, it's a pain to load it with the scope in the way.

Just for clarification purposes... I have owned several different rifles, different calibers, different manufacturers. Out of the box... NOTHING has ever come close to the accuracy as my Savage 10FPLE. Up to and including my Remington and my FN-SPR.

I am now ALL Savage... and NO looking back for me... period.
