I recently signed on and am awaiting my first precision rifle.

Savage 10 FLCP-K in 308.
Leupold MK4 Rings.
Warne 1 Pc. steel 20 MOA rail.
SWFA SS 10 X 42 Tactical, rear focus.

I have been researching between the Remington 700 SPSV and a Savage for about 14 months and decided to go with the Savage due to the glowing accuracy reports. The accustock and the DBM were the kicker for me that pushed me to chose the Savage. I will take delivery of the Savage on Monday.

I have had a set of Leupold MK4 rings for about a year now and decided to go with the Warne base. Has anyone had any issues with Warne bases and/MK4 rings?

I have a range about 6 miles from my house that is 400 yds. now and is going to be extened to 600 yds in the near future. I plan on using this Savage as a range gun and possibly for hunting.

Well done Heim. Its not very often we get an PFC on here who has already established his research. Savage is an excellent rifle and you will be happy. Welcome to the Hide.

I have no experience with Warne rings but most seem to find other rings to use. I'll leave it at that. What scope are you planning on mounting? That will be more importanty than the rings anyhow. Savage seems to put out a good rifle though that should suit you well in this new hobby.

Welcome to the forum and to the long range shooting community.

The warne base and mk4 rings are an excellent choice. As you walk yourself around this forum you will notice a company called Seekins Precision. If you havent already purchased the base and rings I would opt for the Seekins first.

Re: New to this forum & new to long range shooting.

Thanks for the welcomes.
The reason I went with the Warne base is it was the only one I could find on the SWFA site in Left hand (for a reasonable price) in steel. I already have the SWFA Super Sniper optics. I chose it due to all the great reviews it received and the price.

I will have the Rifle on Monday.

I am wondering if it would be cheaper to have a gunsmith mount the base and optics than for me to purchase a mounting kit and doing it myself.

Warne makes quality parts, but you may have clearance issues with the ring and base combo. Install the base on the action and then the ring on the base and see if the bottom of the ring (the bottom of the female dovetail on the ring that goes under the base) is contacting the action. Try to shine light under and look for a air gap or look on your action after removing the rings for the finnish to be scared. Pay close attention b/c it hard to see. If the base is too low you can alwayse shim it.

When you look at reduxing the stock on that Savage, check out the options from the MODSS line at McRees Precision and the B&C Medalist for Savage - both good choices.

Re: New to this forum & new to long range shooting.

I received the rifle and I am impressed with the creep free 1.5# trigger. I have been having trouble locating a steet base in Left hand. Today I ordered a 20 MOA base from Badger. I have only read great things about the Badger bases and I am sure I will be pleased with it.

The Accustock seems very rigid, but is also very light.

The rifle should be put together within a week. I am very excited to start shooting it after 2 years waiting and saving the cash for everything.

Re: New to this forum & new to long range shooting.

I finally mounted the base and optics. I used the feeler gauge mothod for leveling the reticle.

Only problem is, its too damn cold here in North Dakota to take it to the range and the snow is deep too.
