I recently purchased a Howa M1500 chambered in .308Win This is my first long rifle purchase as I am usually a pistol kinda guy. I bought it with the 20" heavy barrel as well as the Hogue OD Overmoulded stock. It came with a 4x Nikko Stirling Scope and I have a few basic questions that Im sure you guys can answer.

I just want to know if the Hogue stock is worth having bedded?
Also what other little nuances should I look out for as I break it in?

Any particular places specialize in Howa aftermarket parts?

Because I am in California I am still waiting to pick it up. This is the closest pic (wrong scope) I could find to what I purchased.

Thanks for the help.

Re: New with Howa questions

Ditch the scope and ringsmounts immediately and get a one-piece picatinny rail (20moa slope if you plan on shooting beyond 800yds) and buy or start saving for a decent scope w/ appropriate rings (TPS are decent and inexpensive.

The Hogue stock should have aluminum pillars and isn't worth bedding. Just shoot it as is until you can buy a B&C, HSprecision, McMillan, Manners, etc. stock.

Roedale Precision probably knows more about Howa actions than just about anyonelse. But they're in Germany.

Re: New with Howa questions

The Howa shoot great for the money. I like their action as well as a Rem 700. Just not as many aftermarket accessories for it.
+1 on what BB said about the stock. Shoot it until you can aford to get something different. If it han't been altered you can most likely sell it here and get a little of your replacement.
I would get a 20 MOA rail. Do it right the first time. If you get a Farrel, ask for a low profile mount.

Re: New with Howa questions

Depends on how much adjustment there is in the scope. If you're scope has about 90moa of adjustment, then you don't need a sloped base to get to 1000yds with a 100yd zero. But most scopes don't have 90moa of adjustment thus the reason for the sloped base. 20mos slope is the most popular since it gives enough added travel to reach to 1000yds but still able to get a 100yd zero. Depending on the exact load, it takes about 38-40moa to go out to 1000yds from a 100yd zero with the .308Win

You should be able to reach to 500yds with a flat base. BUT as Scimitar stateed, if there's ANY chance you might get to shoot long range, getting a 20moa base doesn't hurt anything.

Re: New with Howa questions

I found 20MOA and they of course are backordered. SO i am on the notify list but they have the 10MOA in stock and I still plan on getting new glass so they flex to get something with a lot of adjustment is still there. I dont know what the rings are yet as I havent taken delivery but the Nikko Stirling 4-14x44 is whats on it now. I have read they are a little better than the average BSA but they arent a MK4 for sure.

Re: New with Howa questions

Some one mention Howa ?

well the hogue stocked 1500 is probably the best choice of the line up as the wooden stocks leave something to be desired. (as do many factory wood stocks, the howa-legacy stocks are no better and no worse than many) I'm not sure on the Axiom version, having not played with one for more than about 5 mins, they are rare over here.

The main problem with the pillar bed hogue is the very flexible fore end, now as a grab it and go hunting rifle you probably wouldn't notice the forearm flexing, but shoot it from a bipod and you will definately be pressing the stock hard against the barrel as soon as you put weight on the bipod. You could combat this by removing some stock material. It is no better and no worse than the injection molded offerings from Tikka, Remington and the rest.

The full bed block (FBB) is a far better stock and all it needs is a little bedding compound to locate the action centraly, By experimenting i've found the rifles with the Hogue bed block shoot better with bedding compound to the right and left side of the front part of the action. I figure Legacy would be better to offer a FBB version for $150 more, it would sell better and be a better product.

Otherwise there are plenty of after market stocks available for the Howa 1500.

Manners, Wild Dog, B&C, Hogue, McMillan, and our own Roedale RCS and probably some i haven't mentioned.

The basica Howa 1500 is a well made rifle. The trigger is very tunable to around 1lb pull and is safe. ( you can adjust the sear engagement and pull weight down to about 2 pounds but if you go lower the safety blocks and some alteration to the internals is required to make it work with the trigger lower than this weight.

Occasionaly you find one in which only one bolt lug is in contact, but this can be remedied, by and large the headspace is usualy nice and around minimum,
The action is a basic copy of the older Sako actions, with improvements for ease of manufacturing and reliability. Is simple to maintain, is reliable and accurately made when compared to many other factory rifles.

As far as aftermarket accessories go, we are working on it, we already have the RCS chassis system, the RMS magazine system, our own picatinny rails, and will have a 3 position safety that works on the firing pin ala win 70 some time this year. Fact of the matter is, what more do you need with the Howa, I can honestly say that i haven't seen a factory .308win Howa, that once bedded into its factory stock,( or better yet put into a better aftermarket stock,) that wasn't a genuine 1/2 MOA rifle with the right (usualy Lapua) factory ammo. Sure the wood stocks warp and you can chase the groups acording to the weather, but we've seen more than a few basicaly standard Howa's (apart from a decent stock, bedding, trigger tune, re crown and lugs lapped that would hold a honest 1/3 MOA.

I dunno if Dave is near you, maybe he can give you some Howa tips.

Re: New with Howa questions

Im working on that right now but havent found a single box of ammo in stock in any of my local spots. As for the glass, i referred a friend to an apartment and I am getting a 500.00 for referring him so give me some advice Lone on a nice piece for around 3-400 so there is some left for ringie dingies. Its not going to be a hunting rifle so I want to be able to touch to 500 and I will be happy. You know my attempt at a new career so well see how this all plays out.
