Hello all, I am new to the board. I just got my first AR10 308 and need some help with scopes.

My rifle: DPMS LR308 w/24" Bull Barrel and Flattop reciever.

I have narrowed the scopes to 2 midrange $$ choices:

Bushnell Elite 6500 2.5-16 x 42mm Tatical OR Nikon Monarch X 4-16 x 50mm Tatical. Both Milldot reticle.

Both seem impressive for the money.

My 1st dilemma is that I see the Bushnell 6500 has 91% light transmission whereas the Nikon has 95%. Does 4% really make that much of a difference?

My 2nd dilemma is that the Bushnell has 80MOA elevation adj whereas the Nikon only has 50MOA elavation adj. I read that the Nikon might not be able to take you out to 1000yds with only 50moa. I am not sure the rifle is actually capable of 1000yds, nor do I know that I would ever try/ be able to find a range to shoot to 1000yds, but it would be nice to know I can. So, can the Nikon be used out to 1000yds with 50moa with a 308?

Thanks in Advance,
Dave

I've heard very good things about both scopes and I was actually considering the Monarch X until I purchased a Leupold Mark 4. I don't have much experience with Bushnell scopes but I have owned a few Nikons and all I can say is that they make excellent scopes. The clarity of the glass is as good as scopes that are more expensive.

If it wasn't for the 50 moa internal adjustments on the Nikon then it would be a no-brainer. If the 50 moa of internal adjustment on the Nikon isn't enough to get you out to 1000 yards then you can probably buy a 20 or 30 moa base and that should do the trick.

Good luck with your choice.

Just those two?

Look at the bushnell 4200 FFP models (look at lowlights review of the 3-12 one), the Sightron SIII series, the nikon monarch non-tacticals and the vortex viper. Those are the mid-priced variables in higher magnification that I know are decent.

Also consider a fixed power scope, if you're just target shooting something like a 16X Super Sniper would work quite well for not a lot of money (I'm assuming you want a higher magnification scope).

1000 yards? Depends on lots of factors. I would hazard a guess that you'd need 35-40 moa of up to get there from a 100 yard zero with a 24" barrel. Most of those scopes above would need a canted base to have the necessary adjustment range.

I narrowed it down to these 2. They are both the tactical models and I think they will compliment the rifle nicely, asthetically and performance wise.

I did consider the Bushnell 4200. I found the 4200 has less MOA adjustment than the 6500, hence the reason for the 6500 line, although it seems the 4200 line has 95% light transmission whereas the 6500 only has 91%

Yes, it has the flattop with a 0moa picatinny rail.

Go with the Bushnell for the elevation travel then. 4% difference in light transmission will be a minor problem compared to not having enough reticle travel.
