Just got my rifle back from Jerry Newman at Newman Precision. This thing looks great! Fit and finish is perfect.

I picked it up just a couple of hours ago, so haven't had time to shoot it yet (daylight savings...sucks). Tomorrow I'm hoping I will have 30 minutes after work to get a few rounds through it. Anways...here's the specs...

Surgeon RSR WSM - 7mm SAUM
Bartlein .284 26" barrel
RAD Brake
McMillan A3 w/KMW hardware
Surgeon DBM
Jewell Trigger
Nightforce 5.5-22x50

Re: Newman Precision 7mm SAUM!

jerry is a great guy and a hell of a rifle builder. you don't hear his name here very often though. he's certainly on my short list of people i'd let do work for me if i didn't do my own.

Re: Newman Precision 7mm SAUM!

Thanks guys! I'm diggin it right now. Can't wait to work up a load.

I plan on keeping it this way. I like the looks and Jerry recommends it for heat transfer.

300, Jerry is a great guy! Easy to talk to and builds a heck of a gun. Plus he's here in my home town!! Can't beat that with a stick!

Nice. I would be interested in what kind of velocities you are getting out of your rig, and your powder selection. I have a 7wsm with 28" barrel in the same action.

Thanks. In the next day or so I'm going to try to do some testing. Between work and it getting dark at 5:30 it may be tough, but we'll see. I'm really just shooting for around 2,850 with 168 Bergers. That should save some barrel life and be plenty flat shooting!

Re: Newman Precision 7mm SAUM!

Cool thanks for the link!

I'm going to probably start with some 168's and 180 Hybrids. I've got the hybrids ready to go so they may be my first. I'm thinking of starting with 62g or H4831SC, 180Hybrids, Federal Magnums Match.

I'll get something together and post on it.

Thanks!

Is this a compressed load? Do you know what the freebore is on your rifle? Mine is supposed to have .125, and I am wondering what my case capacity will be with the 180 vld. I would like to try Retumbo but don't know if the capacity will be there.

Re: Newman Precision 7mm SAUM!

I have .078 of freebore. Also forgot to add that I changed my shoulder to a 35' same as a wsm. That may give me a half grain more room. Not really sure on that. With the 168 I just start to have a little crunching of the powder if I don't shake the powder down. The 180 vld's are going to have the same seating death as the 168, but have a lot more of the bullet down into the powder column. That is why i decided to shoot the 168 and let my 7wsm shoot the 180 vld. Have a Bighorn short action with the Alpha mags with a 28 inch barrel. I think h1000 is going to be your best bet. That is what is shoot in my wsm.

Re: Newman Precision 7mm SAUM!

Thanks guys for the info! I think I'm going to try some 4831 and H1000 with 162 amaxs and 180 Hybrids (cause I have all that stuff). If I can't find something there I'll try 168's and maybe the 175 XLD?

Don't over look the 175gr SMK. Its a fantastic bullet - top of Sierra's line in terms of form factor. I would test 180gr Hybrid first with H4831sc and H1000. If that ain't doing it for you, next is the 175gr SMK with same powders. 162gr Amax would be next - or maybe first, depending on what range you wish to shoot (under 1000, 162gr is first). Just my two cents

I don't think the 168gr or 175gr Berger VLDs have much roll, unless you are a hunter or have some speed role in mind. Again, my two cents - no offense directed at anyone using those bullets
