Hi all,

Looking for a new scope to sit atop my TRG 22 I have been offered a 12-42x56 NXS with NP-1RR ret in perfect condition at a good price. Not looked through one, no one I know has one and the nearest place that has one in stock is a 4hr drive - one way!

I'll be shooting targets out to 600-700m with it.

If anyone has experience using the NP -1RR then I'd love to know your thoughts on the usefulness of the range finder, multi cross hair / dot marks, thickness of the cross hair and dots and just generally how it handles target and field work.

Many thanks
John

First of all welcome to The Hide. I have the 12-42, but not in np1-rr. Mine is in the NP-2dd. I have mine on a 243. It is a great scope. My only complaint, and you'll get this with all high magnification scopes is that mirage can get pretty heavy at times. I have to crank mine down to 12 from time to time even shooting at 400 yards. I know your main question is on the reticle itself, and I have no experience with that reticle. If you're using it for primarily target/ varmint shooting it is a great scope.

Hi diderr, I live in north west England so mirage is not a big issue for me!

I imagine it won't be cranked up to 42 all the time. None of my shooting pals have a spotting scopes and I'm sick of riding to and fro if I can't quite see where the round has hit so the extra mag will be useful this and save me fuel!

I've got one atop a Barrett .416. I too have the NPR2 reticle. I shoot to about 1400 yards and I don't have any problems with the scope. I'll be getting it much further out soon. I love my NF scopes. They can take a beating and still work like a swiss watch. They track well. The thickness doesn't bother me at 1400 yards.

I looked at this reticle a few years back for a 5.5-22. I liked the idea and it has some useful holdovers if you do your homework with the reticle. The only issue I could see on the 12-42 is that it is a second focal scope. It depends on what power the reticle subtends properly. If it is 42x then you would be able to use the reticle the way it was intended to be used at that power. The next best way would be to turn it down to 21 power at which point the reticle would subtend twice what it should. That may or may not make ranging difficult for you. I suppose it depends on what you will be ranging. If you usually have to deal with alot of wind it will diadvantage you as there are not as many holdover spots as one a standard moar or something similar.

Subtends to scale at 22. It has an "R" there.

The NP-1RR doesn't have hash marks. It sounds like you might be describing NP-R1 reticle which has 1 moa hash marks on the vertical stadia and 2 moa hash marks on the horizontal stadia.

No, i am thinking of the right reticle. While it doesnt have hashes it does have holdover capabilities with the main vertical crosshair as it has dots, lines, etc. All of those points subtend a certain moa from the main crosshair and can be used as holdovers. Same for the horizontal markings. What I was trying to say is that you can use them to an extent, but it isnt as easy and intuitive as the MOAR or NP1R reticle. But it can be done.

I certainly agree.

I have a 3.5-15 with this reticle... What is your intended purpose with the rifle it will sit on?? The ranging marks at the bottom are fairly accurate, but I learned not to rely on it all the time. The elevation marks, well that greatly depends on your load up. Mine has been mounted on a coyote rifle. I've since purchased an SHV model with the moar reticle. I will be testing it out soon, but I have the feeling I will enjoy the reticle much more. The NP-1RR seems too busy for me and if I end up enjoying the moar reticle, I will most likely send my np-1rr scope in for a reticle change.

Whats interesting about this reticle is that you can set it for different size targets for the ranging portion of the reticle. By taking the target and placing it at 300 yards, you adjust the magnification of the scope until the target fits in the 300yrd mark. Your scope will now be able to range for that target size as long as the magnification is at the proper setting.

Hi Koobs, I'll be using this on a TRG 22 .308 for target shooing out to 700m

It will also be used for crows and possibly foxes. I think the ability to use a cross hair or dot is a neat feature. I also want a ret that is fine, not keen on the CH range though.
