I have 3 NF, 2 USO, 2 Leupys, and 1 S&B. The S&Bs have an easier zero stop, I like the clicks more on them. The glass is very clean. I can get to 800 yards in 1/2 turn. The NF you will turn a full turn + 8 moas. The USO you can do similiar as the S&B but the eye relief seems to be better on the S&Bs.

They are all great scopes. I think the S&Bs have less minus than the other scopes. The only minus is the cost. But I think the price of the S&B went down some.
No matter which scope you pick of those choices. Are great scopes.

Forgot to mention which one I prefer. <span style="font-weight: bold">USO</span> all the way baby, because it was <span style="text-decoration: underline">FREE</span> and Doc sent me some naked pictures of himself while drinking wine. Now THAT'S what I call quality customer service!

I almost went with the NF F1 when I saw Rob (and Tony right?) running them. Waiting on a PR because Scott is an awesome guy that worked with me (Free plug for Liberty Optics while CS is being bantied about so much-he is one of the best!)

What part of what I said was controversial? Pretty sure I was clear and concise on everything I said. No controversy. I GUARANTEE if there was a legitimate poll taken, where people would be honest about the experience they have had that you would see more problems with Wandering zero and especially parallax problems with the USO. A much higher percentage of USO's go back. CS is/was great with USO. I won't argue that. I have talked to the CS at NF... great people, but I have never had to return a scope to them.

I shoot with a guy who won't piss on a NF b/c he said he had one that wouldn't track.

I also shoot with a guy who is sour on S&B b/c of problems he had with his that they just couldn't seem to fix.

I also shoot with a guy that can't stand USO.


Etc, etc, etc....

So which scope is supposed to be the best again?

Now I can also flip that on it's ear and tell you there are guys shooting (and wining) using all of those scopes listed above.

So where are we again???

i agree 100% with j. i had a millet trs 1 before i got my us optics. now i know its neither a night force or a uso but the first one failed on me. but the second one they sent to me worked like a charm. i dont care whether you spend 20 dollars or 4000 dollars on a scope, they are not all perfect. ill quote a friend who taught me about the fundamentals of shooting pistols for speed and accuracy when he said," it is a mechanical device that can and eventually over time will fail." of course he was talking about the safety but you get the picture. as i have said before, i have nothing against nightforce. i think they are excellent scope, and will tell anyone about them who doesnt have the money for a uso but wants a top of the line scope. ive just had some time to look through each side by side on rifles, and mounted on a tri pod like binoculars and the uso was clearer. even with the mirage. on top of that, they had all the options i wanted on a scope so i bought one. thats just my opinion, and yours is yours.

That's why I said it was personal preference at the beginning of this topic. I don't agree with attacking any one of them. My USO's do what I want them to, and that's really all I care about. If one of them breaks, they will fix it and treat me right doing it.

There are plenty of rigs out there that aren't wearing a $3000.00 scope and still getting the job done...if it aint broke don't fix it.

I have/ had 7 NF scopes still have 3 NF NXS. All work great. I did drop one when the sling broke, landing the 15# rifle right onto the elevation turret. Scope still tracks perfectly. My latest is a 5.5x22x50 that has the mil, mil with MLR. Absolutely love it.
Had the USO spotter, hated it, went back to a Leupold spotter.
A friend has had his USO to the shop twice now. Clarity issues and tracking issues.

I'll not stoop to your maturity level with unwarranted personal attacks, so I'm just gonna outline it for you real simple.

1. You came asking for opinions on which is better because you were in between.

2. Several people posted a preference for USO

3. A couple of people posted saying USO is crap

4. Less than 24 hours later, based on what a few people posted and you looking through one USO scope, you decide that you agree that USO is crap

I own USO and NF and I don't really have a preference either way but your quick rush to judgment makes me think that either your intentions for starting the thread may be a bit suspect or that you are just immature. At first I was leaning towards the first one but your reply has made me understand where you are coming from.

Question to all you guys with no problems. Have you run a tracking test out to atleast 40 MOA or 10 mils? And have you put your reticle on a reticle chart to make sure they are right on ass the way out and not just the first couple of mils? If not do it and get back to me. Hold overs are no good if you're not holding in the right place and the same for dialed data. Whoda thunk.

The best thing about USO is you can make the scope. If you want MDMOA, PCMOA, Mildot, illm.reticle, turrets, tube size, the list goes on. This is the only scope that I know of that has that many features you can pick from. The service is great.

Nightforce is a great scope also. You can't pick from as many features as the USO scope. But Both of them are great scopes. I don't know how long this thread can go on. Quaility on high end scopes are both at the top.

Another reason I went with USO is the parallax issues. Using the forward bell style parallax is way more forgiving and accurate then the side focus type.

If your parallax is off at distance and you are in your rifle wrong or in an odd position and you've dialed your parallax wrong. Chances are you're gonna miss.

I had a horse step on a NF once... wow...that was ugly. Client wasn't paying attention dropped his rifle, spooked the horse and crunch... sounded like someone crushing a wineglass in their hand.

Not sure how many ft. lbs of energy a 1250 lb horse pivoting on a hind leg atop a scope generates. But I know that the housing of a NF can't handle it.

Given I use the ponies to hunt this incident plays a part in my decision as well.

So when I weigh variables I'm weighing as many as possible.
In my mind all scopes will have issues. Somewhere, somehow, sometime. I'm trying to limit/extend my time with/without said issues.

Rob 01, I just tried grid testing 3x USO sn9 10-42x80, 1x sn3 1.8-10x37 ERGO and 1x sn3 3.8-22x44 ERGO scopes on a USO bore sighter over at least 40 moa of travel, all tracked fine. I have also done a fair bit of shooting with the sn3's and sn9's and know they track well on paper also.

I tried other test with the bore sighter such as looking for poi change through the mag range - none (not expected with FFP).

Have you tried with a NXS to see if point of best focus at max magnifiction say at 60 yards is also parallax free, it was not for me but no issues with either S&B or USO in that regard. Also have you tried with a NSX whilst looking at a bore sighter grid to adjust the parallax if any vertical poi is observed - it happened with the S&B, not sure if this is a side focus thing or what.

I am intersted in what can be testd by using a bore sighter (I have also tried pushing on the scopes from the side - you can move poi but it always returns to the same place when pressure is released. Also you can get a good idea of how rigid or otherwise stuff like picatinny rails are - my Brugger and Thomet ones are crap).

I think this could be a good way to share information on what we can see with a bore sighter regarding optic funtion.

Don't use a bore sighter. I actually shoot to test the travel.
Have you actually put up a target at 100 yards and a grid and shot and tested tracking that way which is the way it will actually show problems? My MOA SN-3 was the only one that was on so maybe it was a mil problem as my 4 mil SN-3 scopes were off bad. Off about 10%. 10 mils was actually 11.3 mils of travel. Not just on one scope. My 2x Nightforce F1, Premier 3-15 and 3x S&Bs all tracked perfectly.

Have shot the F1 down to 30 feet and never had any problems with parallax when adjusted. You shooting an F1 FFP Nightforce or comparing a SFP?

I had a Premier...traded off for a USO with H-25 reticle. Much happier now. Premier is mechanically the best scope made in my mind. However, you can't see the Gen 2XR reticle with older eyes for one and for another...with my glasses the focus could never be obtained. So to some its great for others USO all the way. So if you see another 30mm or 34 mm SN3 with H-25 keep me in mind....I want one more.

Rob 01, the NXS was a 12-42x56 SFP. Yes I have box tested my scopes, but at 50m. Most of my shooting is a few shots say at 150m, followed by a few at 500M then back to 200m and repeat. when a scope does not track it is soon obvious. My sn3 scopes are moa.

No arguement that shooting is always the best way to test a scope for tracking however I do find a bore sighter is a good tool though with more uses than just getting the first shot on target; for a start it can give you an idea of where to look for issues.

Bore sighter would be fine to get you on target but I would trust shot data more to test tracking.

How many MOA did you go out for the box test? I always box test also but it's only about 10 MOA or 3 mils. I do a full travel test out to 40 MOA or 10 mils of vertical to make sure the scope will give the correct elevation I dial on. I do it on every scope I get no matter who makes it as I don't have ranges past 400 yards and when I go shoot matches I need to use ballistic data to 1000+ yards and need to know that when I dial on the data it is what I am getting.

Rob 01, box test with sn3's was 30 moa x 20 moa horizontal. with sn9's I went 100 moa vertical. It was easier to make targets for 50m than 100m (half the height). One or two of the sn'9 scopes will be used on LR rigs hence the extended vertical testing plus with that system the actual value per click depends on the rear turrets position on the picatinny rail so I had to do a reasanable test to get an accurate value.

A <span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">correctly calibrated</span></span> boresighter/collimator is the perfect tool for measuring reticle calibration, click value, etc and will be every bit as accurate (likely more accurate) than measuring any other way.

If the worry is reticle movement/loss of tracking <span style="font-style: italic">due to recoil</span>, of course shooting is the only way to check that. But for me a scope needs to pass a bunch of other tests before I even bother wasting ammo on that.

I had an interesting scope discussion the other day with a benchrest shooter who holds several world records. Here is what he said.

"Reliable tracking is the most important aspect of a good scope. I need to know that when I dial in x number of clicks I get x adjustment. I'd rather have a scope with slightly less "fantastic" glass but totally reliable turrets than the best glass and less than reliable tracking." He no longer uses Leupold, said that Nightforce scopes are too heavy for the events he competes in (but gave them the reliability thumbs up). He is now using March scopes along with many other benchrest shooters because they have proven to track perfectly.

After reading countless threads on this subject, the only scopes that I hear have completely reliable tracking are Nightforce and S&B. There may be some newer scopes out there that meet this criteria...time will tell.
