After all the crappy things that have happened in the last week not to be mentioned. I thought I'd clear my head after work today by working in the garage. I mean why not I have a lot of little projects I need to finish. So I start up the phase converter to warm it up before I start the machines. Five mins later the most horrendous noise you could think of comes from the idler motor. Yup spin a bearing. I can't catch a break lately. Anyone know of a cheep source for 3ph motors in SE MI?
Thanks
Donald

Same thing happened to my air compressor motor the other day while blasting.

Not sure how SE you are, but Yoder machinery in Holland, OH has tons of motors laying around, not sure on price, but they probably don't mind getting rid of them.

You can probably just pull the end caps and put a new bearing in. Unless its sealed of course. I've had my American Rotary convertor motor apart when it started making noise, turns out they never removed the inner shield form both bearings and grease from the provides zerk was just oozing out around the bearings and never making it to the races.

I made the converter myself. It's been working great for the last six months. The motor was made somewhere around 19-0- fuck. It was only a matter of time. It was just ill timed. When I put it together I didn't want to risk damaging a new motor. But it worked flawlessly and I managed to get all three legs balanced within 3.5 volts so I never messed with it hoping I'd get lucky.

Thanks for the info. I will probably give him a call tomorrow or Friday. I tracked down the problem. For whatever reason the phantom leg jumped in voltage(almost 200v to neutral) which didn't trigger the coil in the contactor that drops out the start capacitor. Which naturally smoked the cap. So I'm guessing the windings are bad in the motor. New parts needed are as fallows
New or rebuilt motor
New start capacitor
New contactor
All and all a fairly expensive break down.
Thanks again for the info
