Looking to learn how to shoot a bolt rifle long range. I don't have much experience in shooting, so no bad habits yet. I would prefer to start right and figure a weekend school or something like that would be a good way to progress quickly. anyone know of a good school in the northeast that i could begin at?

not much feedback in the beginner markmanship section so i figured i'd try over here.

If you are after instruction and want to do it cost effectively head to Forbes Rifle Range in Albany, NY sometime next spring / summer when they have a long range match going on and sign up to shoot for a day they are shooting 600 yards.

Contact the match director ahead of time and ask if someone could teach you the basics of how a match runs, what you would need and what would be expected of you. They could pair you with a veteran shooter who would be more than happy in most cases to spot for you and get you on target for the first time.

There are a lot of good guys that shoot long range there and it is probably one of the closest 600 - 1000 yard ranges to Mass. I would think.

Just an idea and not sure how many schools would be in the northeast though.

PM me if you have any questions on anything!

Good luck!

Don't send him over to us...we don't need no stinkin new guys! LOL!

There really aren't a lot of options for schools in the northeast. But, there is hope. I would recommend you do the online training here. It is worth every penny and you'll be amazed how much you can learn from the videos.

Then practice, practice, practice dry firing in your own living room or backyard until we open back up in March. The winter is when I do a lot on .22 practice from my back deck, BTW.

As I said, we open back up in March and we can have you over to get you squared away. Thurs are when we shoot 600.

If you truly have your heart set on a class, then book yourself a ticket to Texas and get down ther to see the boys at Rifles Only.

Re: Northeast shooting school suggestions

Check out the Sig academy in southern NH. I tool the scoped rifle class there last year and it was pretty good. The just extended their range from 600 to 1000 yards. They are doing two classes in the spring. One is a 3 day scoped / precision rifle and the other a one day skill builder on shoot out to 1k. I was disappointed they didn't do any unknown distance work with the last class but it was still very good.

Also check out northeast shooters and the listings for highpower matches. New England has a very active shooting community. If your in the Boston area check out the braintree rifle and pistol club, their team won the state rifle comp. Only the top 5 score are used so even if you're not very good the score doesn't affect the team overall.
