After finding myself embroiled in an Internet shouting match over the NY SAFE Act, I decided to see how one might go about owning a legal and unregistered AR in NY state.
Turns out a viable (if hokey looking) solution was no further away than my LGS. Thordsen Customs provides an NY SAFE Compliant Stock system, their FRS-15. Ordered last Friday, the dealer installed the stock, and the required Carbine length buffer system, and I took it to the range this past Thursday. The cost for stock, buffer, and installation runs about $255 including tax.
It looks weird, no question; but it also allows the AR to be brought out into the open and shot in public with no (current) legislative strings attached.
Once one gets behind the rifle, though, it fits great, functions at least as well as the previous Stag furniture, and feels perfectly normal to a shooter who shoots conventional (non-pistol-grip) rifles. After some shooting, looking over, and digestion; it just about perfectly fulfills the notion of how one might design an AR if the pistol grip was not originally deemed a necessity. Personally, I'm not at all certain the stock could easily weather repeated vertical butt strokes of a full tilt boogie Military nature, but since I'm not in a Military slot, I can deal with that pretty well.
I like my scope mounts low, and the carbine-length buffer tube cover provides a pretty ideal cheek rest, and can also line up pretty well with the 45 degree offset BUIS I have mounted. There is a single point sling mount supplied, and a total of five anchor points in useful locations.
So, in answer to those who wished I enjoy the NY SAFE Act, I will never enjoy it; but I will also do just fine in the face of it. Thanks for providing me an incentive to finding a way to pull the SAFE's fangs. Here in NY that's a pretty good development.
Meanwhile those of you who own unregistered ARs can now find a way to get them out of the closet in a fairly reasonable manner.
