I need to settle on an action for a .338 LM build...
Preface: Tactical build, long and ELR steel, not competition...

A lot of players here- but variations in receiver dimensions (and barrel shanks) are unclear to me from the information I see on their websites. Do all require the 1.350 barrel?

Trying to get this done with a 700 clone action that'll fit standard stocks/chassis- is it SOP to build this chambering on an "oversize" action? (I know I need the .750 bolt...)

All seem to be priced about the same ($1500 range), so what would be a prudent choice for a shorter lead time build (hopefully by the time I can get the blank, 2-3 months)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Curtis Custom just came out with an Axiom LA with a Lapua bolt option. Probably the first place I'd look if I wanted something without waiting forever. Prefits are nice too.

Going to a .750" bolt is part of the story. The OD on the lugs is also larger. That's how you increase surface area. To broach or wire EDM the bolt lug rails for an .750" bolt with larger diameter lugs the tenon threads have to be larger. One leads to the other.

not always are the lugs large on 750 bolts defiance is not some only increase the bolt diameter and that just makes the action weaker with out increasing the OD of the action the main issue is not the bolt diameter your main concern should be the tennon diameter

if you want thebest action for the lapua and still fit into the 700 footprint with little inletting go with the new pierce 800 series action its one I had him build and design for wildcatting

I am using the Surgeon XL on my 338s. It is not Rem 700 footprint (the XL is 1.450" diameter), but it will still fit most Rem 700 stocks/chassis (AIAX, JAE, Manners, McMillan...). It is a BEAST of an action and I highly recommend considering it.
