Spring break time is approaching and I want to offer parents of "spring breakers" some advice. DO NOT allow your children to go to Mexico for their vacations. It is simply too dangerous to take the risk.

Many areas of the country have deteriorated into total anarchy. Kidnappings and murders are common. There have been more murders in Mexico than all the war related deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan combined. The entire country is in turmoil with Mexico's President increasing pressure on the drug gangs and the resulting retaliation by the gangs. With the killing of drug leader Leyjva by federal troops, the competetion between the drug cartels to fill his spot has increased.

These animals are ruthless and will stop at nothing. They recruit teenage kids with drugs and use them as "dispensibles", furnishing them weapons and drugs to carry out murders, kidnappings and torture of their rivals. The drug cartels also have their own more professional enforcers to carry out kidnappings for ransom of both Mexicans and US citizens.

Make no mistake about it, these are extremely well armed and dangerous people that will stop at nothing to further their drug business and they have now begun to infiltrate more ordinary businesses as fronts in order to launder their drug money. It is impossible to depend upon the local police, and in many cases the federal troops, for protection and help since many are on the payroll of the drug gangs.

Please try to talk to your kids about this and discourage travel to any place in Mexico, from border towns to luxury resorts. None are safe from the drug related war going on down there. I cannot over emphasize how dangerous it is. By example, we will not hire anyone that has a family for our business in Mexico. It is simply too risky.

If this saves even one family from the agony of losing a loved one to the drug violence, it has been worthwhile to post this.

Re: Parents Beware

Long ago I established an agreement with the Mexican people. If they will stay in Mexico, I will stay in the US.
I have kept my end of the bargain.
The Mexican Government has been corrupt for a long time, and looks as though it's getting worse.

Re: Parents Beware

I second that bump and further recommend the college kids come to Florida. I also request that they damage every door, lock and other door related hardware, they come in contact with while here. I'll be only too happy to repair or replace any damage!

Have fun in the Florida sun this year kids!

Re: Parents Beware

Good advice.

Corruption in Mexico is rampant, and kidnapping is a growth industry. If you get in trouble in Mexico, no one will save you, not the police and not the military.

Nearly 40 years ago, I had the experience of watching from an orbiting aircraft equipped with FLIR while Mexican Army troops blocked off a 2-mile stretch of a highway so an aircraft could land to pick up drugs.

And now it's worse.

There is simply no good reason to be in Mexico.

QQ, if you ever get anywhere near Mid-TN, let me know. You are a piece of work and lunch is on me.

Don't be greedy QQ, let them clip a few buildings with a car or something so the rest of us have some work too. Since the damn hurricanes have decided to be useless of late, we need something to drive up the existing-home repair market

Shhhhh! Too many of them already think the same thing! Growing up in SoCal I always will have a little soft spot for some of their women, but not enough to make a dedicated trip.

I'm curious what exactly the gun-laws are. I know in general you can't legally own them, but it seems to me that it would be in the gov't's best interest to allow the development of the "safe vacation entourage" trade. This isn't the first such warning I've seen, so they must be losing dollars. Labor is cheap, so why not actually flip it? Charge more, and provide a security detail. What's more pimpin' than rollin' south of the border with your personal Jack Bauer in the minds of today's spring breakers/My Sweet 16ers? I guess that might make the tourists even bigger targets, but there is a threshold where the price buys a capable enough team. We haven't lost any foreign figureheads there that I've read.

Re: Parents Beware

How dangerous is it for moderately intelligent, observant and savvy adults to go to Mexico with their families? We go with 4 other couples every couple of years. We're planning to go this year in May. We've typically gone to Puerto Vallarta, but are considering another city. Should we be considering staying in the states or choosing another country?

Re: Parents Beware

Ya know, America is plenty big enough that you can travel a life time and not see everything. I've done my share of travelling overseas. I prefer to stay within the borders now.

Although, a trip to Aussie lands is in the long term plan.

Other than that...f-em

Re: Parents Beware

For Spring Break my buddies and i are heading off to junction, texas to go axis hunting. I am more excited about this trip than any trip ive made to south padre or any other beach resort. you can have more fun in the woods with a few good buds than on a beach with a 1000 idiots. stay safe

Re: Parents Beware

There are areas that are OK and areas that you should never go. TJ right now is not so good. That is being nice. Lots of kidnapping of families including children and just random acts of violence. Other less populated areas that are not border towns are much better but I still would just pick some other place.<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Originally Posted By: Tim K</div><div class="ubbcode-body">How dangerous is it for moderately intelligent, observant and savvy adults to go to Mexico with their families? Re: Parents Beware

If you ever get the chance to see the episode of that show Gangland that deals with the los zetas, you'll see a peek of what this is all about. Its freakin nuts and I know I wont go down there. Im really surprised the US Govt hasnt stepped in on this situation.

Re: Parents Beware

If I try to tell the others in my group that we shouldn't go to Mexico because the guys at S.H. said we shouldn't, I'll get some push back. Upon searching this subject I found mostly articles stating it's not dangerous unless you're involved in activities you shouldn't be.

I don't doubt you gentlemen, I really don't. I just need some confirmation from other sources. Anyone know where to get it?

I know of a significant number of young people that have been killed or kidnapped while merely shopping or dining. We have lost two of our people and had several wounded over the years. We're from Colorado. Indeed, most if not all of the sources I found saying it's safe were travel related (no surprise there). I think it really is more dangerous than is generally believed, I just have nothing but this thread to point to for proof.

Re: Parents Beware

Here was one of my posts from January. As others have said go at your own risk. Sounds like you already have your mind made up anyway. Hey stick your finger in a light socket maybe you will get shocked depending on if the switch is on. I don't have personal experience with being electrocuted so you should be fine.

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">Last week a kid from a local school here was killed during an attempted kidnapping. A Friend of mine's nephew and wife took there sand buggy down there 6 months ago. Did some friendly racing that just happened to be a one of the small time drug lords. He was killed, his wife was killed and his brother were killed. You have fun and stay safe. You have been very lucky.</div></div>

Why the insistence on making snide remarks? I don't see where in my posts I could be understood to have already made up my mind to go. In fact, the exact opposite it true. I'd like to not go, I'd just like to have more evidence than this thread to point to. I appreciate your input on the subject but could use less attitude.

Re: Parents Beware

Snide because I am an asshole. However It seems just common sense to tell you the crime, murder, and kidnapping rate has soared in Mexico. The drug cartels are more ruthless in their trade than ever before. I gave you my link to personal stories. Did not think I would have to give you a detailed rundown with power point presentation. There I go again. Sorry. There is a difference between having buddies rib you because you won't jump out of a perfectly good plane skydiving, it is another when there is a definite risk to you or your family due to you wanting to have a good time. Your family because if you get kidnapped it is your family that has to deal with it.

In that case, we'll get along great! Judging by how many people tell me, I'm one, too.

Thanks again to all for the info. I'll be recommending we go elsewhere this year.
