Pelican 1750 layout for air travel

How do you guys lay out your rifle and equipment in your Pelican 1750 for air travel?

I need to cut my foam when it arrives wondering how I should lay it out so the guys at the airport throwing cases around won't damage my gear

Scope towards long side handle
Butt towards wheels
Cut holes for:
- AW mags x3 inserted vertically into the foam- slim slots- though two layers of foam
-Bolt assembly- cut through first layer
-Supressor- cut through one layer
-Bipod-cut through one layer
-I travel with lots of ammo so two square holes for 100 round plastic boxes towards wheels

With four, non-TSA, padlocks I come in right at 49 lbs.

If I can ship the ammo to my destination I will put my LRF or other gear in the Pelican

I always do scope up but curious why butt towards the wheels

I'm the same as PDXGS. My ammo is always separate from the rifle though.

I try and keep the mass of the case (CG) towards the wheels. Makes things easier to maneuver when using the wheels.

with wheels, generally the case will be wheeled, butt has more sq footage so less likely to drive thru the foam vs the thinner barrel. weight distribution comes into play also.

Ah that makes sense. I never wheel mine so I never thought of it.

My foam just arrived so I'm gonna start laying it out as you guys suggested thanks

Can the ammo be put in your normal checked bag? In an appropriate ammo box of course

Check with that particular airline. My ammo had to be in a separate checked bag the couple times I've flown with all my gear.

Yes, although I've never had an airline make me separate the two from one case. I always make sure to put a TSA lock on my luggage if there's a checked firearm inside it (also locked with non-TSA padlocks) just in case.

I fly often with various firearms, and the easiest thing for me has been regular nylon range bags inside my iMI storm case. Just took my MK12 to Arizona and I had the rifle, mat, rear bag, 4 mags, tools, earpro, 300'ish rounds of ammo, etc. and came in at 50# on the dot. Different nylon bags for different rifles. Makes life way easier than having multiple sets of custom foam to contend with.

Most airlines stipulate that ammo must be in original container or a hard plastic container that was intended to carry ammo.
That needs to go into a locked (TSA) bag - hard or soft.

I bought the egg crate style foam top and bottom pieces, they are listed on eBay. Place rifle and gear into the case, close it and weigh it. No worries and it doesn’t shift around enough to matter. If you’re paranoid wrap the scope with an extra layer of bubble wrap. (I just use my scope cover.) Narrow boxes of ammo can replace sections of the lowest third piece of foam.

Pop $20 for a handheld luggage scale and try to aim for a high of 47-48#. Remember the case weighs 19-20# alone.
