Just out of curiousity... where are all those 'urban types' with bugout plans going to go? Think country folks are lining up to welcome convoys of Minivans and SUV's in to share their resources? Think that 'bugout cottage' you think you own is going to accessible... or that the people who live in the area are going to A. Let you get to it. B. Let you have what's inside it? C. not just take everything you have?
There will be roadblocks at every small town ingress/egress road. There will be roadblocks, defended, at every single interstate exit. If you can even get to an Interstate exit. Because the Interstates will be loaded with broken-down, out-of-gas vehicles and thousands of pedestrians trying to find safety a few miles a day.
As for silver having value in challenging times... it indeed has physical properties that may be helpful. But mainly it is a small-denomination metal that has been recognized to have intrinsic value for thousands of years. It is also much lower value than gold or platinum. You aren't going to buy a chicken with a 1 oz gold coin. And most transactions will be barter economy... not thousands of dollars in a single coin or bar.
Silver on the other hand has value in a barter economy because it has intrinsic value. Not like mint copper-clad cpoins or paper dollars. Old 'scrap silver' as pre-64ish coins are often called... is 70 percent silver. Easy to calculate 'real' silver value. And small enough that if you don't have something small enough to barter for milk or a few round of ammo or an animal quarter... you can transact in Silver.
That said, it will probably take years after a bad event before even a barter economy arises. Or it will happen in small towns and areas where people create their own settlements or clans. Think Medieval villages. Or City states.
Last, for those thinking the Army will control the large cities? How? Their high-tech gear isn't going to run without the power stations. They're not getting fed without a supply chain. Maybe they can defend, say, a capitol for a while On cached/stored supplies. But how are they going to get there? How long will they have fancy jet fuel? Or even Diesel? Or power? Or Communications they depend on so much now... How many will simply desert and take their gear and weapons and head home to their rural community... or whatever is left of it. Army marches on its stomach... and these days the 'stomach' needs to feed hundreds of pounds (tons?) of high-tech equipment for each soldier in the field. No longer are we talking about colonial or civil war troops who were fed off the land. And could even cast their own bullets around a campfire (not that that happened a lot). But modern militaries are incredibly energy-dense entities. They need massive amounts to do anything. They're not going to control anything outside of a few dots in the countryside. For a while.
None of this stuff is going to end well if we have 'events.' Think 535 AD through 1500... Before things really started to get back on track at a technology and knowledge level. Can we bounce back quicker? In theory, yes, if knowledge is not lost. Then again, how much knowledge is lost daily as boomers and older generations die and noone in the younger generations knows how the 'Infrastructure' was built. Or how to maintain it. You think that some Las Vegas refugee surviving Glampers are going to move into Hoover Dam and be able to make it generate power? Much of our infrastructure will be useless and will die due to lack of any comprehension of how the 'system' once worked.

I'm bugging in. Unless and until I can find a place so remote no one will wander out there on foot, and by road will be easy to block. Maybe one full year before coming out to see who's left.
I live one tank of gas from Portland, Seattle, Boise and Spokane. I expect a bunch of Urban dwellers will saddle up and head for God's country, and the few who make it all the way here will have to be reckoned with.

Since this is the topic at hand, I highly encourage a read through of or audible listen to this book. "The Book of Signs" by Dr. David Jeremiah. He holds a PHD in theology and has spent most of his pastoral time, focusing on and studying the coming of the ages. He approaches the topic from a biblical perspective and he doesn't paint a pretty picture. He believes that we are, in fact, at the beginning phases of it based on the fulfillment of biblical prophesies that have occured in the last 100+/- years. There's two more major prophecies that must come to bear before the rapture. We're all in it together, wether you choose to believe it or not. Hold fast, my brothers.
