I just caught/read that article last week myself. It was... an interesting opinion I'll say. It became more interesting when I clicked on the author and read some of their other articles. I I recall right- expat in Europe (Spain if I remember right) who freelances writing... pointed articles supporting that lifestyle. Can't say that they're right or wrong either but rather that I chose a different path for my own reasons is all I guess. It seems to be working for them, at least based off of their published articles but I went the more, I'll say, traditional route myself.
