Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

So I picked up some 1/2" AR500 armor plates in various sizes. They will have a slight downward angle as I'm hanging them to deflect jackets downward. I'd imagine that these can handle any handgun rounds at any distance, but how about rifle rounds? I'd mostly be shooting 308, 223, 7.62x54R, 30-06 - will these plates handle those rifle rounds? At what distances? Might be easier to tell me what I should *avoid*... eg, don't shoot 223 at closer than 50Y, etc... So, anyone know?

Uh, thanks... but that doesn't really help. Even so, AR500 @ 1/2" should be able to take FMJ hits. It's the distances I'm asking about for certain calibers.

I've run .308 @ 600 against 1/2" AR500 from Big Dog and the rounds don't do anything but crater the paint on the surface. Against the white paint that came on them, it's difficult to tell where the hits are located until you have the targets at arm's length.

You wouldn't by any chance be using that kick-ass Russo bubinga-stocked rifle would you?

I have 3/8" ar500. I have shot it at 100 yds with a 223 pushing 75 gr bthps at 2750 and havent left a mark.

I've dimpled AR500 at 100 yards with the AR15.

At 300+ it just takes off the paint with anything I've thrown at it from the 223, 308, 30-06.

Those that are talking about divots and dimples from .223 - is that 1/2" AR500? Or 1/4" or 3/8"?

Re: Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

The one thing I have that has but a hurtin' on my AR500 plates is a 45-70 guide gun pushing a 405gr solid at 1750 or so... Even the 7mm Mag with 168 bergers at 3050 left only tiny dimples smaller than the head of a ballpoint pen, and that was at 100 meters...

Re: Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

I would say at least 100 yards for any rifle and 200-300 if you are going to use fmj with the AR. The faster the bullet the farther you want to be. Try to stay away from edge shots if you can because depending on how the plates are cut the edge may be slightly brittle compare to the center. I have both 3/8" and 1/2" steel from Big Dog Steel and have put very small dimples with my AR and .22-250 at 100 yards. Hope this helps.

The thickness of the AR500 has nothing to do with cratering. If a round is cratering the 3/8" than it will also crater any other thickness. The thicker steel will protect against bending. Cratering is about bullet speed and hardness. Thickness is about bullet energy.
Here is some good info on .223 rounds and AR500 cratering. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...560#Post2527560

Re: Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

I witnessed dimpling of AR500 targets at the last carbine match I attended. We thought that a competitor was using SS-109s but an equipment check showed that he was using M-193 ball. Magnet tested of the bullet heads proved no steel.

His batch of ammo was significantly hotter that the other shooters with M-193. There were noticeable dimples on the steel out to 300 yards. Speed will damage steel!

Good luck

Jerry

i"ve shot bigdog steel @100 with .223 and .308. didnt do shit to it.

Re: Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

I'd only add that at shorter distances, .308 and up will flip the plates around the bar for practically anything smaller than a 12 inch plate. Smaller plates are generally too light for .308 at short range.

Re: Picked up some AR500 plates - take 308 hits @ dist

I shoot M855 steel penetrator at mine (3/8" AR500) at distances 150 yards and greater and it only dimples. It should outlive the barrel.
