Hi All

I'm pretty new to the whole long range scene and was hoping you guys might be able to put me right on a scope for my soon to be built, long range hunting rifle. This rifle will be used for hunting in the Southern Alps of New Zealand for Tahr, Chamois and other deer species at ranges up to 600 yds or so. I'm hoping to achieve an all up weight of about 8.5 lbs. The cal is 7mm RM and the rifle will be crafted by Chad Dixon using a Defiance action, Brux 26" #3 fluted barrel, McM edge stock etc.

In keeping with the mountain rifle theme if poss I would like a mid range variable scope with side paralax adjustment and as lightweight as possible. I'd prefer to stick with a 40mm objective. The only one that I have found so far that comes close is a Mark 4 Leupold 4.5-14 x 40 with custom shop M1 turrets for about $1000 - however I would pay up to $2000 for the right scope.

Would love to hear what you guys would recommend.

Cheers.

Murph.

Now that right there is funny!
Lab test done in Germany show Lepold has much better glass and is a lighter scope. They also take more abuse. That market place is very demanding and i took leupold a long time to gain their trust, Nighforce isn't even close. Also, both Ziess and Swar. glass was rated a bit better than Leupold. Again, nightforce didn't even make the top 10.

Yes the NXS 2.5-10x32 is a contender but I was just a bit concerned about the lack of magnification and light gathering ability for those 600 yd shots in overcast or twilight situations.

There are always trade-offs, light-weight and thinner tube vs. larger heavier scope.

Nighforce 3.5-15x56 is a nice scope that will give you excellent low-light clarity but is bigger.

Take a look at U.S. optics too, such as SN-3.

Do you want to dial or hold over? Also NF and leupie are pretty damned expensive in NZ, are you going to order it from overseas?

As far as light gathering in a hunting scope sub-1k scope I think the zeiss conquest IOR hunting are the best out of what I've used although they aren't 2-3k swarovskis either.

Friend of mine has one of these on his 7mil hunting rifle:

It's not a Nightforce though.

as a side note that leupy isn't that bad either depending on how much you can get it for. I'd rather have a holdover or ranging reticle vs. a duplex though and a lot of the leupies I'm find in aussie/nz stores are duplex.

I would go with the NightForce 5.5-22X50 with high speed turrets and zero stops. The 56mm only gives you a few more minutes at dusk.
