I will be hunting deer this year with a 450 Bushmaster. I need a decent optic for it and I do not believe I will need to go past 250 yds (this weapon is limited past that anyway). So, what are your thoughts with the following:

1. Out to 250 yards
2. Its on a 450 Bushmaster (recoil)
3. I would like to keep it under $250
Let me know what you think. And please vote/use the poll below.

Vortex makes a great optic, very clear and performs in lower light. For $199 it will be hard to beat.

The good thing is the MPBR for that rifle and a 250 gr load is about 225Y, so if you zero at 150 you will never have to touch the turrets, just hold for wind. My point is you can focus your purchase on glass clarity and a wide field of view, vs other bells and whistles.

I'd recommend a fixed 2.5x Leupold "ultralight" - it's only 8 ounces of TOUGH little scope. Perfect for something like the .450 Bushy. I had one on my .45/70 Marlin for years and it worked great. Still have the scope, on a different rifle.

Deer at 200 yards? Not a problem. How much magnification do you need anyway? For hunting with a modest-range thumper like that, I'd be after a wide field of view and a tough little scope.

Just thoughts...

I bought a MK4 1.5-5 the other day and will be getting a larue mount for it just so I could swap it around between hunting rifle and my AR and other semi auto's. I have a personal fondness for low power scopes and reddots as I have spent most of my life shooting with an aimpoint and got really used to it.

I have a custom 308 and have a Vortex Viper 6.5x20 on it and I love it. I guess I should look into the Viper 2x7 a little more. I just like trying new stuff, but, if it's not broke don't fix it right?

I agree with most of the previous posts. Wouldnt go with any more power than a 2-7x.
A 1-4x would be just about perfect on that setup

Weaver does make quality gear, but the Kaspa series is their Chinese line of scopes. ATK backs them up with a warranty, but when I am hours away from home, in the cold, wet and tired, I dont want a warranty I want a guarantee. The Viper will not let you down. You can do some more research on scope reviews. Vortex is now what Leupold used to be.

I know that others have stated this and you don't really seem interested but I think that you're really doing yourself a disservice by overlooking the 1-4x scopes.

You really don't need anything near a 7 or 9x top end and the 1x will be very useful. I have a leupold 1-4x turkey scope on my .45-70 guide gun and it really works well. At 1x it pulls up quick and isn't much different than looking at the target with a nice duplex hovering over it......very quick and plenty to reach out to 250 yards for hunting purposes.

Whatever you decide good luck
