Primer Dimple....

I know primer dimples aren't great for primers but my hand
primer rod has a small nipple on the top part and is leaving
little dimples like the middle primer in picture below.

I know dimpled primers can lead to misfires from the firing
pin and creating a miss fire. But is this really show stopping to
have a small dimple or just an eh not pretty but it should
still fire properly with out a round failure.. I'm not too
worried but my cousin kinda made it seem like this is a major deal.

(Shooting 175g SMK HPBT 308 win. using Varget powder and CCI 200 primers from a Remington 700 SPS tactical bolt action rifle)

Doesn't look any different than a primer from an M 4 after the bolt was closed. I don't think it would hurt anything. If it were me I'd try to take the dimple out with a grinder/file.

Take to your primer rod with a tiny jewelers file and take off the nipple

My large priming 'punch' on my Dillon 550b puts a little mark on my primers, maybe a tad smaller than yours, but it's no bother.

It's not the 'indent' that matters, for slam fires, but the acceleration of the the firing pin that matters most.

It's easy to tell my ammo from others, so that's kind of a bonus for me.

Yea I figured run over it with some fine grit sand paper. It was just I loaded about 100 rounds and they all have the dimple and he made it seem like the primers were shot with it. This is my first batch of reloading so I know a little but not a whole lot just making sure..

Cause I know when firing pins get older sometimes the dimples can cause mis fires and dud rounds.. Just what I have read.. Not really sure what size dimples they were talking about but I figured any bigger than mine might be a problem but I should be safe

Im workin on loads for that rifle too. What Varget load have you found that works well with your rifle?
Ive had some good luck with 46.0 grains of BLC-2 with my SPS and 175's

Idk I just loaded my first batch last night. I just got my reloading kit about a month and I just got around to making my first batch for hand loads.

I was told just start from 10% under max and work my way up to max and see which group better at 100 yards.. So Next time I go out Im going to shoot my groups and which ever one makes the better group Im going to make all my loas with that powder charge.

CK, I would probably try to remove the nipple on the primer pin as well. However, be careful not to reshape or add a point. That being said, that little dimple is not going to hurt your ammo one bit.

I know the RCBS hand primer has a flat end and a domed end on the rod.

In the instructions it says "make sure the flat end is toward up! Maybe you have the "domed" end up and thats why your getting that.

Try flipping the rod around and see if it has a flat end.
