In a van, down by the river.
Gonna getting the hell out of California after being born and raised here. Will be initially crashing with my best friend for the first handful of months in the area NW of San Antonio until I get shit stabilized.

Couple things I'm looking for in order of priority:

    1. Long distance places to shoot/PRS matches?

    2. Whatever you Texans in the area think I need to know LOL

Have no fear, I'm never ever going to "vote like a Californian" in your state. That's stupid. I'm coming to Texas because it's Texas, not California.

    Habla El Espanol. LOL

Go as far NW as possible. the Hill country up that way is beautiful though I hear prices have skyrocketed since I sold my place. Rio Frio, Leaky, Mountain Home, Bandera, is a nice area to settle in. A bit further west toward Rock Springs the prices go down.

Long range is harder in the Texas Hill Country than it is in Southern California. Not sure what you do for a living, but as Maggot said, it has gotten expensive there. Not Southern California expensive, but.... still.

Texas has a serious shortage of public land. But it’s ok.

Yup, make friends with lots of land or find a nice shooting range for you to shoot long range. I'm not familiar with the ranges in the San Antonio area, so I can't help there.

@clcustom1911, about a ~3 hour drive away, the matches put on by Dave Ferguson and Prentice Wink at CCC in the Navasota area are awesome. The matches are excellent and there's a great group of guys that shoot them. I highly recommend making it out that way for some matches. They put on monthly club matches plus national two day ones.

Also, if you are ever looking for training, check out Rifles Only and do a PR1&2 class. Chase Stroud of Pumps Precision Rifle Training/Applied Ballistics is excellent if you are looking for any private training.

    Enjoy Texas!

7 Fox Trot is South of San Antonio in Pearsall, Texas. They have out to a mile, and they do monthly matched. They guy who owns it just started Independence Precision Rifle Club. Other wise just to go and shoot you have to be a member, and it's around $750 a year.

There is a San Antonio Precision Rifle Club FB page. They post info about matches and such (my parents retired there 20+ years ago). It's certainly changed over the years.

Steer clear of the south and east sides; it's become the friggin barrio...

And be prepared for traffic that rivals LA. Even the 1604 loop is a parking lot these days...

Get a thermal and offer to do hog/yote control for land owners....that's one way to get access to private land. I have a buddy in Dallas who started that way and 10 years later he owns one of the largest thermal/night vision outfits in the country. He has access to hunt insane amounts of land now and his FB page has 28k members!

Congrats on leaving the anus of liberalism. I still have 3 friends there who are stuck with kids in school 2 of whom have exit plans in place for graduation day.

You wont be too far from ArmyJerry.
    Get in contact with him.

    He has ALL the ammo......

Maybe look at smaller towns an hour away from SA. Crowds and traffic suck majorly. As if you didnt know being from socal.....

Having been to Bastrop TX about 45 min from Austin, I would like places like vs city.

Dudes in the medical field are all insane, drink too much coffee, good whiskey, and are naturally gifted lovers.
Or so I have been told. ?

Bandera still has hitchin posts in front of most of the businesses...and they are still in use...

Thats enough information for me that I would be ok living there.

I got a buddy that lives in Boerne.... he likes the area but hates the liberals and yuppies that live there. He has lived there like 15 years or something before the area exploded. He is looking to go further out.

If you are medical, you can find work in Kerrville or the outlying areas pretty readily. Depends on what you actually are certified for.
I know PA's looking for work pretty far afield, so the demand is somewhat down. Still, medical jobs are there. PM me if you wish. TheVA is always looking for Nurses, and techs.
Hog hunting isn't free. Everyone who has hogs sells hunts.
Hill Country Shooting Sports has 500 yd ranges and I think they are gearing up for a 1,000. Not sure about that.
If you are selling a house in California you might be able to get some land here, but it will have to be remote since prices have skyrocketed in places like Beorne, Kerrville, Spring Branch, Bandera, and other outliers. There's not a decent place in Kerrville for under 200k. I paid 210 for mine 6 years ago, and cant touch ANYthing like it for under 350 now.
The odds of making a friend who owns a ranch is pretty good in the medical field, but most people pay for a "lease" which can be a couple grand for a season, per rifle, and up to 10-30k for all year. I only hunt exotics, mostly Axis, since I don't care for White Tail. I hunt a friend's ranchito (small place) with low fences that harbors a roaming herd of about 300. I don't bird hunt, either. The fishing is great, the lakes are public owned, and the gulf coast is magnificent. You can camp on the beach if you have a 4 WD and a small trailer. Redfish, black drum, speckled sea trout, flounder, all excel. Bass, freshwater redfish, freshwater stripers in the lakes. Bass and Cat Fish in the rivers, stocked Rainbows in the Guadalupe River.
Personally, I wouldn't live in San Antonio on a bet. Little CA. Far too liberal, far to many people, traffic is horrendous. I say that having had family roots here since 1731. (no typo).
Hill country is nice, but the Trendy have started to spoil it. Fredericksburg is now "Wine Country" so buying a 30 acre ranchette is priced way out of reach for most.
PM me if I can show you around. You are going to have to do a scouting trip as it is. Took me 4 years of looking to find this place.

If only I had AJ's email or other contact info.... I would absolutely love to meet with him and have him bestoweth upon me the Ammo Buying Spirits.

Great information everyone. I really appreciate everything. It's why I love this place so much: Great info, great people, and assholes scattered randomly about ???. This is a pretty much a fresh start, and also kind of on a whim. I'm used to planning my moves 2-3 years out...with this one only a month or two of planning is going into it because another career move I had been planning for didn't exactly work out how I'd planned.

But, overall, I've had it with CA and I'm picking the greater SA area (between SA and Boerne) because my buddy lives there and has offered to help with housing and a base of operations while I get my shit together.

I live in Bandera and would recommend the county, not town. Mico side of Medina Lake is OK, stay away from Wharton Dock side of lake. Lake is beautiful when near full. Live a mile from Bandera Gun Club-great competitive shotgun community, rifle limited to 100yds, 5 25yd pistol bays. Great IDPA and Steel group of shooters. 4H big as well. Pearsall nearest long range, but there other options within range once you’ve settled in. Have a great realtor if you’re going to be looking in the area. You’ve gotten some good comments here. Welcome to Texas and glad to assist in any manner when you touch down.

Thanks man. I'm not gonna be ready to buy a home *that* soon, but maybe in the not so distant future if certain career plans finally work out. I'll definitely be in contact reference IDPA/pistol match info... could use a good dusting off the cobb webs from that skillset.

Second on the medical work in Kerrville, and the great fishing. Padre Island Nationa Seashore is a treaure.

Texas is cool. Your story brings up an interesting phenomenon. My region is experiencing a mass exodus of Californians, Oregonians, Washington people, etc. I see both sides of the story. My buddy who is my partner in shooting comps with a team format is from Calif. He fled for reasons similar to yours. He is from Northern California, but said the policies statewide are awful and made living there almost unbearable. But then I see all these other California plated vehicles driving around with their clearly leftist political agenda bumper stickers tooling around town. Ironically, I think most of them are leaving for the very reasons and policies that are put in place by "lib-tards". What a waste of such a cool state geographically, has so much to offer. I spent a very forgettable 9 months down there and It honestly felt like I was in a different country.

SA has a very substantial medical structure, from Brook Army Hospital, UT Health Science Center, the Methodist Hospitals, Southwest Research Institute, teaching centers, and all of the supporting groups surrounding the above. You should have a multiple of options depending on your background. SA also has a heavily military presence, as well.
Northwest and North sides of town growing very fast-Boerne, Fair Oaks and Helotes as examples. Go further south for more rural towns, as growth around the Toyota Tundra plant is driving new building activity. Your yield from sale of California property may expand your options.
I commuted into SA for 6 yrs and there’s only so many ways to skin that cat-55 miles might take an hour one day, 1.5-2 hrs others. Again, lots of possibilities from all the comments here.

The libtard mice have no idea why the cheese is free, or why it costs so much, or why it's in a trap, so they just vote the way they vote because they're fucking stupid. Kinda like when you go to the grocery store without a list, and you're hungry.... you end up with shit you later realize was completely unnecessary.

OP, you might want to check out the Belton/Temple area ( Bell County) or Waco a bit North. It's still quite conservative and Baylor, Scott and White have great medical facilities. Waco is getting a little ruined because of Chip and Joanna Gaines hyping it on the HGTX stuff which has brought in a bunch of California types. Belton/Temple is largely still current and retired mil because Ft. Hood is right next door. Stay away from Killeen as they don't call it "Kill-een" for nothing.
