PTG Firing Pin Assembly Problem

I put a PTG firing pin assembly in a 700 223 that had the J-Lock system. Rifle worked fine before, but after replacement, I get a LOT of light primer strikes/misfires. Works with soft primers OK, but CCI450 and BR4 is a no-go. Tried 2 different Timney 510s, and a Calvin Elite. Inspected, cleaned and lubed the inside of the bolt body, and the FPA. Put the original OEM J Lock FPA back in, and it shoots whatever I put in it. They claim the J Lock spring assembly is junk, but at least it shoots. A bit frustrated, any advice?

If you're sure it's not a headspace issue or primer seating depth issue, check firing pin protrusion. With the cocking piece let down off the cocking ramp you should have about .060" or so pin sticking out the face of the bolt. I don't suppose it's a solid steel PTG firing pin is it? I had a 2-piece lightweight PTG pin come apart and wreak havoc. Firing pin fall should be about .240" or so too, if I recall correctly.

From PT&G site " Please be advised that Pacific Tool and Gauge's bolt shrouds are not compatible with Remington's ISS (J Lock) ", but I could be out in left field
Yeah, i think they are talking about using just the shroud on a j lock assembly. I replaced the whole assembly with the ptg unit.

So I checked the firing pin protrusion from the bolt face. The factory assembly measured .061". The PTG assembly measured .031". An obvious difference. So I disassembled the bolt assembly again, and noticed a small piece of metallic brass colored debris stuck to the PTG firing pin. I removed it, and reinstalled the PTG assembly. Now the PTG pin protrusion is measuring .063". I will fire some rounds thru it this weekend to verify. For reference, I attached a pic of the much maligned Remington J-Lock firing pin assembly (left) vs the PTG assembly if anyone is interested. Thanks

Keep an eye on that firing pin assembly! On mine, within 60 rounds fired and some more dry-firing, the pin tip broke off, the steel part had loosened from the aluminum body and the cross-pin through the cocking piece had broken in two. In other words, don't trust it until it's proven itself after a while. If you're off shooting matches, bring a spare and the tools to swap it on the fly.

Another update after firing. PTG assembly did OK for about 20 rounds, then started misfiring multiple times. Pulled it out, put the factory J Lock assembly back in, and started firing consistently. PTG is going in the trash. Thanks for the info guys.
