Suppressors Question about Ops Inc 12th collar/brake on my carbine and SPR

Have a Mk12Mod1 SPR that I am waiting to get the tax stamp back on for the Ops Inc 12th Model sitting at my dealer. My initial plan was to use it with this rifle as well as with my 16" carbine since they are both 5.56 platforms and I'm really not in the mood to buy another suppressor and wait for the retarded ATF tax stamp approval time again.

The only real way to do this was to have the Ops Inc collar/brake installed on the carbine which would allow the barrel to get chopped back to 14.5 inches and meet the required overall length. This would allow me to use the suppressor on both weapons. I emailed ADCO about this and they said they COULD do it, but he wouldn't suggest doing it because in order to install the brake/collar they would have to drill and pin through the threads that hold the suppressor on, which is doable but not suggested.

How do I do this then? Do I need to start out with a new 14.5 barrel and then let them install the brake/collar or would we still have the same issue? Obviously High Caliber Sales didn't have to drill/pin through threads so this must be something with the initial barrel setup; what is suggested I do?

Also, if this for whatever reason becomes cost prohibitive or not doable, what suppressor for a 16" carbine is suggested? I liked the idea of the useable brake on the Ops Inc setup but not sure what else is out there.

    Thanks

The HCS Recon barrels are 16" not 14.5".

The HCS I have is the SPR 18". The carbine I have is a 16" but isn't HCS. I was wanting to have the carbine cut to 14.5" and then the Ops Inc brake/collar put on it to use the Ops Inc 12th I have. I think now from emailing back and forth with ADCO that the issue is that for them to cut it down they will have to drill/pin the collar on to meet required OAL and while they can do it, they don't suggest it.

I've kind of answered my own question after some more emails from ADCO as to why this isn't the greatest idea.

I still COULD do the 16" plus the collar, but with the 12th model screwed into that I'd literally have something resembling the length of a boat oar.

Yeah I have an Ops Inc suppressor attachment here. The design puts the breaks threads on the OD for the suppressor right over top of the threads of the ID to attach to the barrel. They would essentially have the drill through the threads on the outer surface (usually they have a smooth OD which facilitates making this process easier). Also drilling and pinning breaks sucks in case it has to come back off. In the end you are doing a whole lot of work for 1.5" and you could basically buy a shorter can (yeah I know the ATF wait is a joke).

Yeah that's pretty much what I thought. I was hoping it could be easier but apparently not.

Now much shorter can a can go?

For the Ops Inc 12th, lets do a little math. Here's the Ops Inc info:

    Caliber 5.56mm / .223 caliber
    Diameter 1.5 inches
    Length past brake 5 inches
    Length past muzzle 6.25 inches
    Overall length 8.7/8 inches
    Weight 21 ounces
Construction Fusion welded 300 series stainless steel

The brake adds about 1.5 inches past the muzzle. So if we're starting with 16" instead of 14.5 due to the PITA process to install it and make it permanent to stay legal, we're at 17.5 inches to the end of the brake. Add the 5 inches past break and I now have 22.5 inches in total length with the suppressor attached unless I missed something.

If I get something like an AAC I can chop the barrel to something like 14.125, add the flashhider mount that brings it back to 16" and then get something like the M4 2000 or Ranger which would bring me to 20.2 for the Ranger and 21.1 for the M4 2000. While its shorter, I'm not sure if the roughly 1 to 1.5 inches are worth it now that I've added up my alternatives especially when talking about another $1k plus in costs.

It almost seems like the correct answer here is to SBR my carbine, attached the Ops Inc brake without worrying about OAL and use the 12th model.

    Thoughts?

Spikes Tactical sells a one piece brake/collar mount that should work with the Ops 12th. It's a bit shorter than the 2" distance on the 12th, so you'd end up with less thread engagement holding the can in place. Also, being a single piece construction you'd lose some of the benefits of the Ops 2 point mount design. The single piece mout would be more likely to become misaligned if knocked around I'd imagine.

If you do end up cutting it down to 14.5", another option for the muzzle end is the Smith Enterprises Vortex threaded for Ops Inc. It's a bit longer than the 12th Brake, but also cheaper. It has flats on the sides for torquing it down with a wrench that would be a good spot for drilling and pinning. I'm running one of these along with a Spikes Tactical collar on my Recce. No word yet on how well the setup works, as I'm waiting until I get out of CA and into a state where it's legal to get an Ops 12th can.

Thanks for the link VJJ, good info. I plan on doing a pinned/welded Ops brake on a 14.5 300 BLK in the near future. It's going to look like a sawed off MK 12 Mod 0. Good idea for that relief cut milled into the threads for the weld, chasing those fine threads would be kind of a pain in the ass.
