Quick detach scope mount - how to size??

How do I pick the size of a QD mount to best fit my scope? With the rings being static in distance for each other I'm wondering if I should get a mount with the rings as close together and a small base or a larger base with room to move the scope in the rings. I've never had a static base and would like some direction from the informed masses.
