Im down to the barrel on a current Mega build. Im considering an 18" Rainier Ultramatch now over the original idea of a 20". This build will be used for steel shooting out to 600-800 range with the occasional 1000 for fun. Would i be better off with either one? I know theres going to be a little velocity loss but enough to be affective? your thoughts please?

18" is fine for the occasional 1000 yard range session. The 600 to 800 no problem at all. Your probable only going to lose 40 to 80 F.P.S. velocity wise going with the 18" instead of a 20".
Alot of guys are shooting to 800 with their 16" barrels.

I have a 18" and a 20" UM on the way.
What ammo will you be shooting and will it be suppressed?
I am having a problem with certain ammo and popped primers ~ Black Hills Match 168 gn and Nosler Match 168gn.
Stupid accurate but a issue with those loads.
I hope a 20" will help and if not then I will just have to be particular on loads.
Ultra Match barrels are great overall and have several builds with them.

When I shoot in NV with my hickstown relatives the 1k yard gong is an old manhole cover. If that is your idea of 1k yard target shooting then an 18" or even a 16" will work.
FWIW my thinking is either get the 20" or the 16" but not in between.

Im sure ill start out with some BlackHills....i handload every caliber i own so far with good accuracy in 22-250 and 270, just havent loaded in .308 yet (ready to though). It will be suppressed AAC-SDN-6. The more i think about its intended use im leaning towards 18" like i said i will very rarely shoot out to 1000, and see myself just having fun shooting this gun and working up a loads for it.
