Dear friends

I ask you to excuse me if there is already threads dealing with these issues earlier.

I want to buy a rangefinder and a kestrel, and do not know which models to buy. I practice shooting on the farm and often have no way to measure distances, shoot caliber 308 win and use the following AW rifles and Sako TRG 22.

I thank everyone's attention.

Sincerely

Miguel - Brazil

Re: Rangenfinder and kestrel ?????

I am new to this also, but I just bought a Bushnell 1500 Rangefinder ARC #205104 and I am very pleased for the money. I ranged a small coyote out to 783 yards today and it easily picks up bigger reflective tagets way out 1400 yards easily. I like it. It works for me.
Kestrel- I have the 2500, but one day will upgrade to a more in depth model. The 2500 was relatively cheap and it does what I want it to. As said before, I am pretty new to Tactical Rifle matches.

Try the advanced search button and hang on. Much better advice out there than mine. Good luck and good shooting.

Re: Rangenfinder and kestrel ?????

It really depends what your budget is. I have a 4500 and love it but it probably has more functions than the bridge of the starship enterprise! The main feature about the 4500 though is the crosswind component reading. As for rangefinders, some may not agree but the benchmark seems to be the leica 1200. I don't own one but have used one and found it to be excellent.

They are nice.

Re: Rangenfinder and kestrel ?????

A few years ago Woolrich had a killer deal on the Kestrel 4500's and thats when I got mine . It may have a bunch of features you don't think you will ever use but if you ever start using shooting software it will make its output even more accurate .

The Leica 1200 is a fine LRF but if you don't need a 1200 yard rangefinder the older Leica 800 and 900 LRF's work just fine and can be found for a bargain from time to time .

Re: Rangenfinder and kestrel ?????

The Leica rangefinder is a great unit, but if you want to range further Swarovski is the best choice for civilian market rangefinders. Generally about $300 more than the Leica.

What type of reticle does your scope have? IMHO if you have mildots then learn how to measure distance the old fashion way... It might take you a bit longer at first, but its much more rewarding. Maybe see if you can barrow a rangefinder to use as a back up just to ensure your ranging formula is correct. Once you have it down, there is no reason to spend the cash.

I just picked up my first Kestrel... That's a definite must have!

Re: Rangenfinder and kestrel ?????

I've been using a Bushnell Elite 1500 ARC laser with Kestrel 3500NV weather station the last couple years with good results.

The LRF definitely does have some downfalls - mostly receiver quality could be improved so you can get more consistant long range readings off less reflective targets but the internal angle measurement and true ballistic range is QUICK, one less thing to worry about.

The 3500NV is a good balance between speed and function, it's got a lot of the main features and has a good protective sleeve stopping you from mashing buttons / screen.
