Any long range hunters here?

How do yall range??

I tried some unknown distance targets ranging with my mil-dot scope.
Well that didn't go to well I hit like 14" low at around 600yds

How can I range accurate without a range finder? (Can't afford one at the moment)

Re: Ranging help?

Practice, practice and more practice. Also get a mildot master.

Ranging is all about being able to break down your reticle to the smallest division. If you can break it down to .1 mil that's good but with practice you can break it down to .05 mils depending on the reticle design. Easier with some reticle designs then others.

You can practice breaking down the reticle at any range. All you need is a known sized target and put it at a known distance range. Doesn't have to be far. 100 or 200 yards works but if you have farther then use it too. I use pieces of cardboard and put it up at the known ranges and then range it. I practice breaking down the reticle. If I am off more than a few yards then i go back and look at my mil reading and see where I was off. It's simple.

Here's a couple pics of some of the cardboard I use. Make it whatever size you want.
