Hello, I apologize in advance if this isn’t the correct forum for this location.
I am new to long range shooting. I found that my biggest hindrance to shooting out past 600yds is my inability to spot my misses and make appropriate corrections. I shoot by myself so don’t have anyone to call my misses/spot for me. I was thinking about purchasing a spotting scope and a phoneskope and recording with video the target and then playing it back in between shots to make my own corrections.
However, I am not excited about purchasing a spotting scope as it seems the price you have to pay for quality is high and and they are not very practical. I would much prefer to get a very nice set of Binos, which have much more versatility. And it seems from my reading, most people are jettisoning spotting scopes anyway.
My question is, if I were to purchase a razor UHD 18x-56 and a phone scope, would the 18x hooked up to an iPhone provide what I am looking for? The ability to spot misses out to 1000yds with a 6.5CM?

For the cost of those binos, you could take a class. Have the ability to spot your own misses and self diagnose. I only recommend that because I am looking at taking some form of training as well. I shoot by myself too, so I understand what you are after.

The 18x UHD are nice binos, I had some and sold them. Only reason was to get more FOV so something in the 15x magnification. The binos dont have a reticle, so you will be able to see where you are hitting. However you won't have any frame of reference to know waht to dial/hold.

I own a pair of Vortex UHD 12x50 Binos. I use them for hunting and observation. But I think there are less expensive ways to accomplish what you are looking for.

For what you described take another look at the fundamentals of marksmanship. $20 gives you access to a month of online training here. There are good videos on how to manage recoil and other important topics as well. Good recoil management and fundamentals will help you spot your misses!

+ 1 on the class as SourGrapes mentioned. But spending $20 first is little risk as it is the cost of like two burritos.

So it would be within the realm of reasonable to spot your own misses with a nice scope with 6.5CM? That's good information and gives me something to strive for. I plan on taking classes once covid clears, but the 20 dollar online classes may be a nice little adjunct until then. A little bit disappointed y'all didn't give me the encouragement I needed to brave the wife's fury for plopping down 1800 bucks.

Were the 18x more or less only useable on a tripod?

I know we all like spending money 😁

I think you are in the realm of reason now.

The 18x are tripod only. You can of course take a quick look at things but it will be too shaky to observe fine detail while handholding.

I say this as a user of 12x binos. Mirage and trace are night and day easier to resolve off a tripod.

You say you cannot spot your own shots/misses past 600 yards - can you elaborate? Why are you unable to see hits or splash? With a 6.5CM and decent glass, you should easily be able to spot hits/misses on painted steel placed against a standard dirt berm out to 1000 yards.

I went through this same thought process early on in my rifle journey. I did buy a mid-price spotting scope and immediately returned it when I saw that it had less resolution than my first-gen Vortex Razor 5-20 rifle scope.

My $0.02 is to spend your money on a good scope (if you don't already have one) and training.

As has been noted in this thread, the online training here on SH is a bargain for the new shooter. Make sure you're controlling recoil properly, and you should be able to spot hits/misses on steel easily to 1000 or more. I can tell you for a fact that I can spot hits/misses on painted steel against a dirt berm at a mile with my Vortex Razor 4.5-27x56 and ZCO 5-27x56 scopes on 6.5CM rifles- of course, one has over three seconds to recover from recoil. Proper recoil control is imperative to spot hits/misses 1000 yards and in.

I went out this week and pulled my zoom back to 10-15x and I'd say I was able to spot splashes out to 900yds about 80% of the time. I think it was a combination of lack of experience and too much zoom. I really appreciate you for chiming in and being willing to help troubleshoot. My wife really appreciates you from preventing me from throwing $1800 dollars at the problem.
