re-tapping holes on a Remington 40x (for bases)

Re: re-tapping holes on a Remington 40x (for bases)

Any of the gunsmiths that are active here on the Hide will be able to take care of it. Ask around on the gunsmithing section to find someone in your area to avoid shipping costs. This is an easy job for any quality gunsmith.

This is a relatively easy smithing job if you know how to use a hand drill and a thread tap. You probably need a new base that is adptable to the lager 8-40 cap screw size.

But if you want to stay with the original thread size, its going to need welding up and redrilling/tapping.

Are you sure it took out the threads in the reciever. 9 times out of 10 if something strips when mounting a base it will be the screws.

As lockedandloaded said it is a pretty easy job. That is until a person walks in with an action that has the holes wallered out, out of square, and has a broken tap stuck in it. And don't let anybody start welding on your action. Look for a gunsmith that can pull the barrel and set it up in his mill so everything is straight and square.

Better yet go over to the gunsmithing section and find C. Dixon. Chad is an awesome gunsmith and he will make sure the holes are stright. Actually here is a post that Chad did on that very thing. http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthre...908#Post2894908

This is pretty funny.

It is very easy to totally mess this up as described by lockedandloaded then have to go to a real smith with a real mill and a real Forster sight alignment fixture and get the hack job corrected. If you are lucky he'll be able to fix it and stay with 8-40s; if not, he'll have to go bigger.

Find a real smith, a good smith, that does not mind doing this work. Plan on at least an hour's labor, and smile while paying the bill because the setup to do this right is meticulous.

As a side note. Most smiths will set it up in their mill and pick up one of the holes then step off the Remmy spacing. Problem is not all Remmy holes are straight and square to the action. The drill just follows the bad hole. Chad is one of the few gunsmiths that uses a real small end mill to cut the holes true to the centerline of the action.
