This is pretty funny.
It is very easy to totally mess this up as described by lockedandloaded then have to go to a real smith with a real mill and a real Forster sight alignment fixture and get the hack job corrected. If you are lucky he'll be able to fix it and stay with 8-40s; if not, he'll have to go bigger.
Find a real smith, a good smith, that does not mind doing this work. Plan on at least an hour's labor, and smile while paying the bill because the setup to do this right is meticulous.
