Reasonable Accuracy Expectations For DPMS LR308

I recently purchased a DMPS LR-308 with the 20" barrel.

I'm working up loads and I know I shouldn't expect the same accuracy my Remington 700 SPS is putting on paper. However, that brings up the point: What should I expect.

So far the best I have gotten is with 155gr Nosler Competition HPBT's (2724 fps/.75") at 100 yards from a bench. I know this is good but I'm not sure if it's a fluke because the loads directly before and after were 1.625" and 2.625".

So, I'd like to pick everyone's brains...what should I expect with this rifle straight out of the box.

Oh, I'm using Varget, Federal Brass, CCI 200's seating to 2.775".

I bet it will not be far off of the sps. They benefit from an aftermarket trigger. They have decent barrels. I dont think you will be dissapointed. Good luck

FWIW, lots issues that could show up could very well be you. I am very confident with my bolt gun and getting there with my ar10, but starting out I had a rough time with the gasser. It more or less will beat the shit out of any issues in your form.

For the first couple hundred rounds I would group between 1.75 and 2.0 inches at 100 with the gasser. Keep in mind this was with good ammo AND I could right after pull out the bolt rifle and shoot great. I was pulling my hair out lol. Some groups were better mind you, but those were good average numbers. Once I got the rifle figured out a bit better group averages DID shrink. Now I am running a pretty consistent inch at 100 average. I'd say the rifle has more in it, so hopefully that will tighten up even more.

I do not see why your rifle couldnt shoot around an inch or a bit over with good ammunition. Even better could very well be possible. Quite respectable for a gasser IMO. I have seen some DPMS rifles that could shoot for sure.

been extremely happy with mine. working on a load now that i recently chopped the barrel to 18 and put a brake on.

even with the fliers, at my 44.4 and 44.5 loads it was grouping rather nicely. I'm loading more in that range and going to do the 30 shot (6 5 shot groups) test that is a thread here to see what she will do consistenly.
load is lapua brass, 175gr smk, 44.5 varget and cci 200 with oal of 2.80

This makes excellent sense. I am very confident with my bolt gun and have only fired 165 rounds through this one. While I have fired my AR-15 thousands of rounds, the recoil is definitely different. (Yes this is obvious.)

I am going to the range tomorrow and will finish out test loads using 168 AMAX's and 175 Nosler Competitions. However, the 155 Noslers are pretty good at .75". I just need to retest to make sure this is repeatable. I will also go prone for the rest of the test, since I was unable to do so earlier. Hopefully this will show improved results. I will post an update as soon as I can.

OP - likely unless you are a superstar at driving a .308 gas gun, the best answer is - it can shoot better than you can drive it.

You will note that most folks have a group or two in the 1/2 MOA or better category and then a couple that they get a little squirely with as well.

With the intent to post, I shot yesterday but ran out of time before I could all 6 groups in. Same deal for me, I shot 3 groups under 1/2 MOA (best being 0.40) then looked at my watch and shot the next group at 1.5 MOA and another as fast as I could at just under 1 MOA. My hat is off to anyone that can keep it together for all 6 groups (if they are 6 consecutive groups and not the best 6 of 15 groups shot). As has been said many times before - it is the singer not the song.

This a 5 shot group with Hornady match ammunition. These are shots 46-50 of a new gun. The only non-stock features are a JP adjustable gas block, extended latch, and ambi safety selector.
(the other 3 shots are scope adjustments)

This is a "true" edge to edge measurement.

I do not consider this a fluke, but an approach to the limits of the gun when other variables are accounted for.

I don't shoot paper much but recently went 3 for 3 on clays @ 600 yds... not too shabby

Here's two targets I shot last week, rounds 124 thru 140 on a new LR 308 Oracle. This one has a 16" barrel with a Battlecomp BABC comp on it. I'm not the best shot anymore but I can do pretty good at times. It seem that I couldn't do better than 3 or 4 shot groups this day. Just gives me a good excuse to go to the range and practice more often!!! The red bullseye is 1.5in in diameter. I was using a Vortex Viper HS 5-15 X 44 scope on the rifle.

I couldn't get better than 3 shot groups, kept pulling one shot each group.

These were 4 shot groups and I did good the first group (in the bullseye) and then it went down hill!!!

Went to the range this morning and found some good results using 168gr A-MAX's and 175gr Nosler Custom Competition bullets to add to the .75 inch 155 gr Nosler Custom Competition groups previously talked about.

These are both 5 shot groups and the micrometer is zeroed at .308 so I could measure edge to edge.

This is the 175gr Nosler Custom Competition loaded with 44.5gr Varget - 2670 fps.

This is the 168 Hornady A-MAX loaded with 44.5gr Varget - 2657 fps.

I'm pretty happy with both, along with the 155 Nosler Custom Competition. Incidentally, the flier is the last shot in both strings. Damn my stupid nerves; I see a good group forming and get jumpy.

On a side note, I found it interesting that each group us using 44.5gr of Varget.

I'm leaning towards the 168gr A-MAX as the load of choice but I hear how the 168's are not as good at long distances as the 155's or the 175's.

I know this is a "can of worms question" but which would be everyone go with?

You didn't mention the twist rate on your barrel,so I'll just tell you about mine.I also have a DPMS LR-308.Mine has a 24",1-10 twist tube.From day one,mine has shot just about everything well(meaning an inch or less at 100 yds.)The load I most often shoot goes like this:
168 gr Hornady BTHP
39.0 grs. IMR-4895
Lake City brass
CCI 34 primer
COL 2.800"
I know this isn't the fastest round out there,but it's damn accurate for me and my rig(under 3/4" at 100 yds.)I intend to work up some 175 gr A-Max's as soon as I can,but unless you really need all your shots in the same hole,I'll bet this load would work pretty good for you.Plus,it won't burn your barrel up either.
