Gunsmithing Recoil pad issue

I noticed that alot of dirt, leaves, etc. would stick to the recoil pad on my Rem 11-87 when I would exit the turkey blind. I brushed it off and noticed that the pad looked like it had melted and was really tacky. It's reserved spot in the gun safe was checked and I found that it had a "sticky" spot on the bottom foam, where the shotgun had been standing. I decided to replace the pad, so an order was made through Midway and replacement was completed. My 870 pad (or any of my other weapon's pads) have not had a bad reaction in the safe. Could this have been something the gun was exposed to in the field, or was this a defective pad that had a bad reaction to the safe's foam?

This happens to those REM recoil pads. If you call Remington they will send your a replacement one. The replacement recoil pad is very nice, and works very well. They will want your ser# to verify your gun.

Good to hear that Remington would have replaced it.

I stand corrected. My old Stack-On cabinet had a foam floor, my safe has carpet.

The tackiness issue has been solved and I'm glad to see that I wasn't the only one with the issue.

One of the prime culprits I have found for this sort of thing (plastic/rubber breaking down) on my outdoor gear is insect repellent.
I have noticed something similar on several pieces of synthetic outdoor gear, and then one day I came in after an outing and answered a phone call prior to showering. The reciever stuck to my ear I had recently doused with insect repellent.
Just a non-scientific observation, but it seems the higher the DEET content the worse it eats plastic/rubber. The mil-spec cutter repellent is what stuck my phone to my ear.
Could you have sprayed or put on insect repellent that got on the pad?

I'm not a scientist, but it was more than likely the chemical reation between the rubber compounds and the foam in your gun cabinet. Similar to plastic fishin worms sticking to the ole style plastic tackle boxes/paint on jig heads.

Pretty good pads on mild calibers. I am quite fond of them. They do however break down often. Some batches are way better than others. I have one that has been on a rifle since they were introduced and others less than 6 months old that glued themselves to the carpet in the safe.

BTW, the replacement Remington pad is JUNK! Similar to the Savage pad that comes on there late model injection molded stocks. They tear easy and have no recoil direction.

Put a 1" Med Pachmayr Decelerator on it and never look back.

It will eat the dipped pattern off your stocks as well.
