I've bought a Tikka CTR 7mm08 to use purely for a hunting rifle, mostly pigs.
I'd like a 1-8x scope with illumination for fast and close shooting and night hunting with spotlight.
My budget is limited to a max $1000.
I'd prefer mil based because all of my other scopes are in mils.

What's out there?

FFP or SFP?

Generally, Premier Arms Platinum 1-8x24 has a mil reticle option in a nice FFP scope.

Burris XTR II is BDC based, but is a very nice scope and the circle makes it quite fast up close.

Hawke Frontier 1-6x24 is a SFP design that is really nice and the reticle is mil-based on 6x.

Thanks. FFP or SFP Wouldn't worry me either way. The subtension are would only be useful to me at max power anyway.
I will look into your suggestions.

USO also makes a nice 1-8x scope and a 1.8-10x also. The VCOG looks good too, so does the EoTech VUDU (and it won't have the same problem the reflex sights did, and besides, they handled that whole fiasco like a champ!). Those 3 would probably be the ones I'd think you could score for around $1k, give or take some. Some good deals can be had on here too and quality scope mfg.'s generally honor their warranty even if it changes hands. I've bought some on here and also a few ACOG's on Ebay that way; only one went back for very minor problems and came back like new same week.

I have a USO 1-8x w/full illum. blue Christmas tree reticle w/ dot, mil/mil, FFP, etc. The blue is actually kind of nice and grew on me. On 1-2x, it works a lot like a dot sight with a ring, and on higher magnification the full reticle becomes visible. It's pretty slick. You can PM me if interested. I like it but the SBR it's on could use something a little smaller I feel (so I may even be open to partial trades).

I'd hold out and be patient for sales if you're gonna go new. Because when sales do come up, they're usually worth waiting for. Or look for used ones here and on Ebay. Patience is important there too though. Good luck!

Often see 1-8's in the Hide PX.

Consider buying used and maybe you can upgrade your specifications.

I have a S&B 5-25 PMII on my LMT MWS.

I went that route when I was just getting interested in this stuff and the LMT was intended to be my one precision rifle.

I've outgrown that fantasy.

I have a USO 1-8 on my smaller LMT CQB.

What I really need to do is put the USO on the .308 LMT and get an ACOG or similar for the .223 CQB.

That will leave me with an unused S&B which would begat an AI or something like that to mount it on.

Yeah this is a cheap hobby.

I like my FFP Burris XTR2 a lot but the BDC is tuned for a velocity range and BC, although you could map out the holds for any cartridge. Or you could tune a load to match closely. The windage hashes are in mils though.

It's easier to just get a mil reticle with 7-08 IMO.

Begat's, lol

I would put an Aimpoint on it and call it a day.

You can pick almost any one of them and they'll all work. Either a T2, H2, or PRO on the front receiver bridge or either a 9000 or H30 mounted like a conventional scope.

Most will scoff at that suggestion, but thousands of European pig hunters can't all be wrong.......

Thanks for the replies. I have considered an Aimpoint, but I kinda want a reticle and magnification for longer shots.
I also have the challenge of living in Australia. So some of your suggestions may not be available to me but will definitely check them out.
I'm a terrible procrastinator .

Some interesting riflery in those vids.

I've been thinking lately of putting together a Euro-style pig/woods rifle. I already have an Aimpoint lying around without a home. I figure a CZ 557 Sporter in 308, a few 10 round mags for it, and a Warne 30 mm ring to fit the 19 mm dovetail on the receiver will do it for just over a grand.

Feral pigs are legally a non-game pest in my state. No limit, no closed season, no cartridge or magazine capacity restrictions.

I've had a strike eagle 1-6, I liked it for the price (I liked the glass and reticle). I did trade it for a spuhr mount and had intentions of replacing it with another. It was a great trade. I'm thinking about buying another this time, a 1-8. I have no illusions of what I'm buying for as little as $350. I won't be missing my dials on a ar-15. I have other rifles for distance.
