I bought these turning holders off here and he gave me quite a few inserts, theyve been working fine, but first I dont know what exactly they were, and I wouldnt mind trying something else.

The style is a TP 21.51

The current inserts dont have any chipbreaker, which has annoyed me when turning stainless in large amounts when it all wraps around the chuck and flies across the shop (if it misses my head).

Heres the page full of them on msc Turning Inserts - Turning & Profiling Inserts | MSCDirect.com

Here is the holder/insert. I just dont know enough about carbide to decide what will work best for gunsmithing purposes, material, chipbreaker, etc.

Thanks

The descriptions of the inserts will tell you if that particular insert has a chipbreaker. Look at page 771 for different grades and applications. Then, just decide what radius you need. you'll need, at least, a couple different grades.

If that confuses you more, call MSC. they're pretty helpful.

You also want to get the coating grade right for your application. I can't make any suggestions since I am not familiar with the brands on that page, so you'll want to pull up the manufacturer's catalog and take a look at the chart that is typically provided. The selection is made based upon the materials that you will be cutting and the speeds that your machine can provide (or that you are comfortable utilizing).

Here is an example:

I've been searching for about an hour. There was a carbide supplier that had a very nice dynamic web page where you could enter all your variable in a wizard-like setup and it would give you all the info you needed on inserts and speeds, etc. I can't find it anywhere though. I wish I'd bookmarked it.

Edit: found it. It's the Iscar Tool Advisor:
