Hey. I have always been more of rifle reloader that a pistol reloader and now need as a few questions regarding reloading .45ACP 230gr FMJ or JHP loads....

1. What are the signs to look for reagarding overpressuring in this load? I am shoothing this out a 1911 (Sig Sauer TAC OPS)

2. What about +P loads. Do you really need +P rated brass to get a load up around 950-1000 fps?

I chose to shoot .45 ACP from a 1911 to shoot suppressed as the cartridge lends itself most naturally to subsonic/suppressed fire. I want to get it going as fast as I can up to 1000 fps, but need to be safe in my approach. Just need some pointers on what to look for as I get hotter on these loads.

Re: Reloading .45 ACP - Max Velocity

Back when I shot National bowling pin matches, I'd run a 255 SWC around 900fps from a 5" gun. You should have no trouble getting a little more velocity from a 230. Use a slows powder like Winchester Superfield and start at 5.8 grains and work up. At 6.1 grains I still didn't see pressure signs but it was more than adequate for my needs. Be safe. These loads were in good condition, standard brass. The loads will have recoil!!

If 1000fps is your goal a lighter bullet will have no problem. A 200 gr SWC is my choice but many people use 155, 175, and 185 semi wad cutters.
