I'm new to the .308, but not to reloading. I browsed the .308 load depot and didn't come up with much for the specs in the title. I'm looking for bullet recommendations and starting charge for both inexpensive plinking loads and hunting/ precision loads. With my 6.8 AR-15, I load out as far as my mags and functionality permits in order to minimize the jump to the lands . Does this ring true for the 308 as well, or is there a widespread standard for COAL? Thanks in advance!

On my ar10 I have always loaded just a bit over standard length (2.800ish for 175 match). Usually around 2.815 or so. Never really tried much further out since these all functioned fine, loaded fine, and shot well. The matchkings are quite tolerant of jumping.

I usually use 42- 42.3 grains of varget (depending on brass) and a 175 SMK. Not a screamer at all, but I get really good case life for a gas gun, good SD and consistency. Mine shot well with the 168s too, but I have way more 175s on hand.

You might find that your gas gun likes a milder load than your bolt rifle. That has always been the case for me at least.
