Hi
Ill try to be as clear as possible. I just built a M24 long action clone, I used a like new factory barrel that was cut to 24 and crowned with a 24 crown. I just got a used krieger barrel that is really close to the 24 countour, the way my luck is i found it after having the factory barrel headspaced and indexed.

My question is. If i use the same recoil lug is it possible to have the krieger installed and headspaced? And then if need be later on switch it back if i have to pack it, so the rifle is lighter. Or should i just shoot out the remington and then install the krieger? I am new to this and dont really want to remove the barrel if i am going to have to head space it again.
Seems like this shouldnt be a problem, but i know these things can be triky with 700 and need to be well thought out before preceeding.
Thanks
Any imput would be greatly appreciated.

Re: rem 700 barrel removal question

If I undersaand this, you want to remove the factory barrel and then install and headspace the Krieger; later remove the Krieger and install the factory. If you don't alter the recoil lug, the receiver, or the bolt face, the original barrel should fit right up and headspace correctly.

Re: rem 700 barrel removal question

if the new barrel is a blank, the smith chambering/fitting it will set it up using your recoil lug and your old barrel should fit back on if you choose to. if you plan on going back and forth between barrels, you should really look into having the recoil lug pinned to the receiver.
